First Stakes Winner for Kuroshio

Mark Smith - Sunday June 16

A fortnight after the Group III winning Exceed And Excel mare Believe'N'Succeed earned worldwide acclaim as the dam of the Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck, her brother Kuroshio earned his own small part in history after his daughter Kurious became his first stakes-winner when claiming the Listed Scurry Stakes at Sandown.

Kuroshio covered just one small book of mares when shuttling to Overbury Stud in 2015 leaving just 22 live foals from 33 mares covered.

He did not make the trip north again until this season, which came on the back of promising results of his first crop, which included Dunkerron, who finished runner-up in the Group II Qatar Vintage Stakes and Daphinia also finished second in the listed Marygate Fillies' Stakes.

Kuroshio stood this season at Clongiffen Stud, where he covered 110 mares at a fee of 6,000 euros.

Kuroshio's rising success in the north is in contrast to south of the equator where a fall in support by breeders last season saw the son of Exceed And Excel cover just 32 mares at a fee of $5,500 and he does not appear to be part of Darley's plans this year.

After making a winning career debut over the same track and distance just over a year ago, the Henry Candy-trained Kurious had been winless in four subsequent starts.

Given a peach of a ride by Kieran Shoemark, Kurious hit the lead two furlongs out and stayed on strongly to defeat The Cruising Lord (Coach House) by three-quarters of a length with Reticent Angel (Dark Angel) a half-length further back in third.

"I'm delighted. She loves it here. She is an out-and-out five-furlong horse," Candy told Sporting Life.

"As soon as you ask her to settle and get six (furlongs), she is just not interested. She is very brave, very game, very straightforward and loves soft ground.

"I have absolutely no idea where she goes next. She could well win a Group race, but it did not look the strongest of races.

"You would not have any grand plans for her. It has got to be five furlongs and give in the ground. That will dictate it. She is not the type who can go again quickly."

Kurious becomes the third stakes-winner for the wonderful broodmare Easy To Imagine.

The unraced daughter of Cozzene has left the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp hero Tangerine Trees to the disappointing three-season shuttler Mind Games (GB) and the Group 1 York Nunthorpe Stakes winner Alpha Delphini a son of Captain Gerrard.
