Mark Smith - Sunday May 19

Newgate Farm’s Wandjina has continued his impressive run of winners at the back end of the season with the Kris Lees-trained Wandabaa making the perfect start to her racetrack career at Gunnedah on Sunday.

Punters sent the Australian Bloodstock colour-bearer off as favourite in the 1000 metre scamper following two impressive barrier trial wins.

Always in the first two from the jump, Wandabaa need a shake-up from Andrew Gibbons to keep her mind on the job before the home turn but she was strong to the line in defeating Denman Unlimited (Denman) by a length with Depth That Varies (Unencumbered) a nose back in third.

With the BOBS Bonus, Wandabaa (pictured as a yearling ) wipes off $20,725 off the $36,000 outlaid by Australian Bloodstock for the Ascot Park consigned filly at the 2018 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale,

She is the fourth winner from as many to race out of the winning Anabaa (USA) Mabkhara who is also the dam of the promising 3yo Sebring filly Seewhatshebrings.

Wandabaa is the seventh winner, six in Australia, by the Group 1 Australian Guineas winner Wandjina who is also the sire of the stakes-placed Grand Scholar, Deep Chill and Express Pass.

Wandjina will stand at Newgate Farm in 2019 for a fee of $22,000.
