What the jockeys said after the Regal Roller Stakes

Brad Waters - Saturday August 19

Jockey Damian Lane said his mount Brave Smash should have "blown them away" instead of finishing a long neck behind the winner Vega Magic in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Lane said Brave Smash ($3.40) got into an awkward spot before running home hard to fall a long neck short of the Group I winner Vega Magic ($3.30 - $2.70) in the $120,000 contest.

The Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained Santa Ana Lane ($15) was 4¼ lengths further back in third.

Below is what the jockeys had to say about the performances of their Regal Roller Stakes mounts.

COMMENT

1st

VEGA MAGIC

DAMIEN OLIVER

The Japanese horse had been showing some good signs and was fairly well backed with 54kg. I always respect the Japanese horses so he has done a good job to carry the 60kg and hold him off.

2nd

BRAVE SMASH

DAMIAN LANE

He was tight at the start and he ended up in a crap position. He should have blown them away.

3rd

SANTA ANA LANE

REGAN BAYLISS

Good run. He's been beaten by two very good Group I horses.

4th

RELDAS

DWAYNE DUNN

Ran well for the right race.

5th

LORD DA VINCI

DAVID PIRES

I thought it was a nice run. It was just a hot field with 60 days between runs taking its toll in the last 150m. I thought he went all right.

6th

MURT THE FLIRT

CHRIS SYMONS

I was a little bit disappointed today.

7th

CHOCOLATE HOLIC

LUKE NOLEN

Better today. He's ready for 1400m.

8th

SOUCHEZ

CRAIG WILLIAMS

It was a pass mark for a horse that hasn't been here for almost 12 months. I don't think he's that comfortable at Caulfield and I think he needs a step up in trip as well.

9th

SCHISM

BEAU MERTENS

She went well. She had a fair time in between runs and she put on a bit of condition. She was soft of run off her feet a bit and she was burning the candle at both ends. She'll have another run at 12(00m) and go back to 1400(m).

10th

LORD VON COSTA

BLAIKE MCDOUGALL

He felt a bit on and off today. He was on the bridle and he was off the bridle.

11th

BERISH

RYAN MALONEY

He needs a lot more racing.

12th

DIVINE TEN

HARRY COFFEY

He was a little bit disappointing. He got there easy enough and he was breathing but he just didn't finish off.

MOST IMPORTANT

MARK ZAHRA

Ordinary.
