Juvenile Trial Watch – Warwick Farm

Tara Madgwick - Monday February 4
Five juvenile heats at the Warwick Farm trials on Monday morning held plenty of interest with some well bred fillies on the winners list and the fastest heat featuring the siblings to two Golden Slipper winners.

Chicago Bull as a yearlingVictorian trainer Peter Gelagotis had a mixed morning with his stable star Levendi pulled up in his heat and subsequently found to have suffered a pelvic frature, but it was smoother sailing for his exciting two year-old Chicago Bull.

The Exceed and Excel colt was favourite for the Group III VRC Maribyrnong Plate in the spring, but did plenty wrong before finishing third to Vinicunca and was then sent for a break.

He had a very quiet trial at Rosehill last Tuesday, but was asked to do more this time around and responded in stylish fashion.

Chicago Bull was ridden forward from the gate by Sam Clipperton to share the lead three wide and then forged clear down the running to win by half a length over I Am Invincible colt Navy Cross, the half-brother to Golden Slipper winner Sepoy with Standout, the full brother to Golden Slipper winner Overreach in third place.

They clocked 47.45 seconds with all three colts looking likely prospects to follow.

Navy Cross as a yearlingChicago Bull was a $400,000 Inglis Easter purchase for James Bester Bloodstock / Aquis Farm / Hilldene / Gelagotis Racing from the Kia Ora Stud draft and is a three-quarter brother to Group II winning juvenile Zululand from US Group II winner Dream Play (USA).

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Navy Cross has had three trials now for three seconds, one of those on December 27 behind his highly rated stablemate Dawn Passage.

A $700,000 Magic Millions purchase for his trainers from the Aquis draft at Magic Millions, Navy Cross was bred by Emirates Park and runs for a syndicate that includes Mount Hallowell Stud in whose colours he runs and Aquis, who are also in the ownership of Chicago Bull, so this trial result was a win win for Mr Fung’s burgeoning bloodstock empire.

Showing plenty of natural pace to lead was the Gerald Ryan trained Standout, a homebred for Corumbene Stud, who bred and raced his full sister Overreach to win the 2013 Golden Slipper.

A flashy chestnut by Exceed and Excel, he was having his first public outing so is likely to take plenty of benefit from the experience.

Beachbreak as a yearlingBrad Widdup produced a couple of interesting winners in Sally’s Day, the full sister to former speed machine and now leading first season sire Better than Ready, and Beachbreak, a half-sister by Sebring to the $1.7 million I Am Invincible colt that topped the 2019 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

A $450,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Yarraman Park draft for Jadeskye Racing/Brad Widdup Racing, Beachbreak is the first foal of juvenile Snitzel stakes-winner Oakleigh Girl.

Beachbreak was slow to jump at her first trial last month, but was smoothly away this time and found the front to lead all the way and win by a length and a half.
