Quest for Colts Leads Aquis to Karaka

Media Release - Monday January 28
The 2019 NZB National Yearling Sale Series is underway at Karaka in New Zealand with the top lot during Sunday's opening session bought by Aquis in partnership with James Bester Bloodstock.

By champion sire Redoute's Choice, the Cambridge Stud consigned colt is the first foal of Group I ATC The Galaxy winner Griante, a three-quarter sister-in-blood to another Group I winner in Grand Journey.

This $800,000 Redoute's Choice is headed to Australia A renowned judge of yearlings, James Bester was pleased with his purchase and thought it was a bargain buy for what he has judged as the best Redoute's Choice colt he has seen at any sale this year.

"I think this colt at the Gold Coast, judging by what the Redoute's Choice colts sold there, would have made well over A$1 million," Bester said.

"In my view he was better than any colt I saw by Redoute's Choice at the Magic Millions, and we got him for NZ$800,000, I consider that value.

"It's exactly what we thought we would have to pay for him. We wrote down that very number on the catalogue page and said this is an $800,000 horse in New Zealand."

Bester purchased the son of Redoute's Choice for a colts syndicate and he believes he has the qualities to turn into a stallion prospect.

"It's for an Aquis colts syndicate," he said. "We're trying to identify colts that will make stallion prospects.

"He's a beautiful Redoute's Choice, the sort of Redoute's Choice that everyone wants.

"He's got a beautiful head, lovely action, a smooth mover, and is a neat athletic horse. The mother was a Gr.1 Galaxy winner for goodness sake."

Aquis have a number of future sire prospects on the track at present including Lean Mean Machine, Brave Smash, Siege of Quebec and Dubious, but are always planning for the future.

"He was James' pick of the sale and he was ours as well, so it made sense that we join forces," said Aquis CEO, Shane McGrath.

"We have got some really good partners behind us now and we are fortunate that James has got some partners that want to join in this horse.

"All the colts will go through the program run by Kacy Fogden at Aquis in Queensland and the first of May we will sit down and work out what to do with him."
