Debut Winner for Deep Field

Tara Madgwick - Friday January 11
Newgate Farm's exciting young sire Deep Field sired a tenacious debut winner at Gosford on Friday in Roman Wolf and nearly made it a double with Redicon a fast closing second on debut at Wagga.

Deep FieldThe Gary Portelli trained Roman Wolf had shown nice ability in his two previous barrier trials and went to the post favourite for the 1000 metre maiden. He jumped smartly from gate one for Jason Collett and led all the way before finding the line to win by half a neck.

A $120,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the Highgrove Stud draft for Portelli Racing, Roman Wolf is a half-brother to stakes-placed Light Touch and is the seventh winner from good producer Exhibit, a half-sister to Group I winner Bonaria and Group III winner Legally Bay, the dam of dual Group I winner and Royal Ascot hero Merchant Navy.

Roman Wolf is the third winner from just 12 runners for Deep Field, who is also the sire stakes-placed Spaceboy, whose only two starts have produced a second to Golden Slipper favourite Tassort and a third to leading Magic Millions contenders Unite and Conquer and Exhilarates in the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Deep Field has had 11 yearlings average $226,818 in the first two sessions of the 2019 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and has many more to be offered before the sale concludes on Sunday.
