Deep Field’s Scorpius Impresses at Sandown

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday December 11

Progressive Deep Field colt Scorpius posted his second win from just four starts when surging away to win as he pleased at Sandown on Wednesday.

Ridden by Michael Dee, Scorpius took up the lead and was never seriously challenged in taking out the Benchmark 64 event over 1300m by a length and three-quarters.

Scorpius as a yearlingHe was one of four winners on the program for co-trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr, who also prepared Bella amore to win for United Syndications.

"He wasn't there to lead today but that was Michael Dee's decision to flow with the colt and it was the right decision obviously,” said Price.

"I think of all the horses I've brought here today... he's a really nice colt that I think will eventually gain some black type."

A $140,000 Inglis Classic purchase for United Syndications from the Manx Park draft, Scorpius is the first winner for two time stakes-winner Scorpio Queen, a talented Choisir mare from the family of triple Group I winner and $2million earner Toledo.

Scorpius was bred by Spendthrift Australia who bought his mother Scorpio Queen for $300,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in 2016 when she was carrying him.

She produced a filly for them by Jimmy Creed (USA) the next year and has now been sent to North America.

Scorpius is the 33rd winner this season for Newgate Farm’s Deep Field, who is the leading Australian second crop sire by winners quite a margin.
