Rising Talent for Your Song

Tara Madgwick - Sunday December 30
The famous colours of the late TJ Smith were carried to an impressive seven length victory at Randwick on Saturday by Mister Songman, a lightly raced son of Widden Stud's Your Song.

Sent out a short priced favourite for the 1400 metre contest following two encouraging runs over shorter trips, Mister Songman led all the way and opened up to win as he pleased in a dazzling display.

Mister SongmanMister Songman (image Steve Hart) started his career in Tasmania where he won four of his first seven starts before transferring to the Sydney stable of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

"He was really impressive," Bott said. "What we saw in his first two Sydney starts was a horse with plenty of raw ability over an unsuitable trip.

"Blinkers on today, up to 1400m and you saw what he can do.

"This is his first preparation with us so we're still learning about him and we'll continue to try and place him through his grades before we set oursights too high."

Mister Songman came to the Waterhouse and Bott stable after his owners, who also bred him, contacted Tulloch Lodge asking would they be interested in taking on the talented gelding.

"This is the first time they've had a horse with us," Bott said.

"They thought he was good enough to target the carnivals in Sydney or Melbourne, chasing the excellent prizemoney and we got a call and we were delighted to take the horse on."

A winner of over $180,000 in prizemoney, Mister Songman is a half-brother to stakes-winner Mister John and is one of six winners from good producing Group III winner Kats Clause.
