Juvenile Trial Watch – Warwick Farm

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday December 11
Four juvenile heats conducted at the Warwick Farm barrier trials on Tuesday morning produced some interesting winners including a colt already established as top class and an unraced Redoute’s Choice filly that has quality written all over her.

DubiousThe Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained colt Dubious looked a natural runner earlier in the spring winning at the official trials and then taking out the Group III ATC Breeders Plate on debut.

The son of Not a Single Doubt was having his first public outing since then and looked the consummate professional. He led for Michael Walker under a hold and cruised throughout to win his 803 metre heat by a long neck in 47.65 seconds.

A $350,000 Magic Millions purchase for Aquis Farms /Ciaron Maher Bloodstock P/L from the Kitchwin Hills draft, Dubious is from stakes-placed Suspicieuse (Fr), who was a winner at 2000 metres so slightly longer journeys as the autumn unfolds should hold no fears for him.

Running slightly quicker time than Dubious was Redoute’s Choice filly Hafaawa, a homebred for Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell trained out of Lindsay Park by the Hayes Dabernig partnership.

Hafaawa was second at her first trial a week ago, but was asked to do a bit more this time and quickly found the front for Kerrin McEvoy to lead on the fence. She bounded away down the running with an effortless change of gear to win by three lengths in 47.54 seconds under her own steam.

She’s ready to go to the races!

Foaled and raised at Yarraman Park as are all the Shadwell homebreds in Australia, Hafaawa is a half-sister to Epaulette colt Soqrat who was sent to South Africa to race and finished last season as the Champion South African 2YO Colt winning the Group I Greyville Premier’s Champion Stakes.

Hafaawa and Soqrat are from Hussonet (USA) mare Elzeeza, who was bought by Shadwell as an Inglis Easter yearling for $650,000 back in 2008 from the Arrowfield draft.

Elzeeza won two races and is a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Group II winner Colorado Claire, the dam of Group II winner Gunnison. The family also includes Group winners Moonovemanhattan and Selenia as well Group I Sha Tin Chairman’s Sprint Prize winner Lucky Bubbles.

Additional two year-old trial winners were California Zimbol (I Am Invincible) and Diamond Thunder (Dawn Approach (IRE).
