First Godolphin Winner for Maher

Tara Madgwick - Thursday August 7

Champion trainer Ciaron Maher saddled his first winner for Godolphin at Kembla on Thursday and he did it with a blue-blood colt by Too Darn Hot (GB).

Barbarossa was a short priced favourite for the 1200m maiden at his first run back from a spell following a busy, but ultimately fruitless juvenile season.

He had five starts at two with his best effort a fourth in the Group III ATC Baillieu Stakes behind Nepotism, but has obviously come back more committed to the cause.

Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, he settled fourth in the run and let down with a good burst to surge home and win by half a length.

Barbarossa is a half-brother to Group winners Encryption and Emanate being the fourth winner from six foals to race from Champion 3YO Filly and four time Group I winner Guelph, a three-quarter sister to Co-Champion 3YO and triple Group I winner Sprinter Bivouac.

Guelph has a two year-old filly by Pinatubo (IRE) called Piedmont and is due to foal to Anamoe.
