Ascot Stakes Win for Karaka Graduate Pinzu

Media Release - Sunday November 25

Karaka graduate Pinzu (NZ) (Pins) collected his first stakes win with a stylish come-from-behind performance in Saturday's A$100,000 Carbine Club of WA Stakes (1400m) at Ascot bringing a timely pedigree update for his half-brother to be offered at the 2019 Karaka Book One Sale.

Pinzu as a yearlingJockey Damian Lane took the six-year-old back to third-last in the eight-horse field, saving him up for the business end of the race.

Pinzu produced a powerful turn of foot in the straight, outfinishing the favouriteIn Love With Paris(Rogano) and winning by half a length.

Bought for $330,000 at the 2014 Premier Sale, Pinzu has now had 29 starts for eight wins, 12 placings and A$336,425 in prizemoney. He is trained by Adam Durrant for owner Mrs S E Miller.

"He's certainly pretty effective on his day," Durrant said.

"We thought today was his day. I was a bit concerned that he didn't settle a bit earlier and that might take away a bit of his kick, which it probably did, but he was still good enough to hold on."

His black-type breakthrough followed a second placing in the Listed Old Comrade Stakes (1600m) in April.

Pinzu was bred by Waikato Stud, who offered him at Karaka. His second dam is a half-sister to their champion stallion O'Reilly(NZ) (Last Tycoon). Another close relative,Madison County(NZ) (Pins), won the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton earlier this month.

A Sacred Falls half-brother to Pinzu sold for $275,000 in Karaka Book 1 earlier this year, and another Sacred Falls colt will be offered as Lot 625 in the upcoming 2019 Book 1 Sale.
