Deep Field Off The Mark

Mark Smith - Saturday November 10

Well-supported to make a winning career debut in a 900 metre maiden at Newcastle on Saturday, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Cosmic Force looked the consummate professional to honour his sire Deep Field with his first winner.

The smartest to jump under Mitch Bell, Cosmic Force sat alongside Foxy Rocket in the early stages before taking control at the 250 metres and was strong to the line to defeat the odds-on favourite Blazing Miss (Sizzling) by three-quarters of a length with Stralex (Stratum) back in third.

A half-brother to the Group III winner Onemorezetta, Cosmic Force (pictured as a yearling) was a $180,000 purchase by China Horse Club Racing / Newgate Farm / WinStar from the Ascot Park draft at the 2018 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

He is the sixth winner from seven to race out of the Commands mare Little Zetta who is a half-sister to Listed ATC Ming Dynasty Stakes winner and multiple Group placed Mote Than Great (More Than Ready).

After missing to Vancouver in 2016, Little Zetta foaled a Your Song filly on September 11.

A record-breaking sprinter that won five of his eight starts, Deep Field, like Zoustar, is by Northern Meteor, who was the Champion Australian First Season Sire in 2013 and comes from the family of top-class sires Commands and Danewin.

A brother to Shooting To Win, Deep Field has been one of the nations most popular stallions since taking up stud duty at Newgate Farm in 2015, averaging over 200 mares covered in his first three seasons at a fee of $22,000.

His first yearling crop averaged over $138,000 with 135 sold headed by Kia Ora Stud's $675,000 colt out of Reggae while China Horse Club signed for Deep Field's highest price filly, a $650,000 daughter of Cressfield Stud's Shoboard.
