Aquis Win Derby with Domesday Colt

Tara Madgwick - Saturday November 3
Earlier this week Aquis announced their purchase of a share in exciting Domesday colt Extra Brut and that decision paid big dividends when the three year-old powered to the line to score a stylish victory in the $2million Group I VRC Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Prepared by Darren Weir, Extra Brut reeled off three successive wins following a debut second at Geelong in August culminating with a big win in the Listed VRC UCI Stakes over 1800 metres on October 6.

He settled kindly back in the field for regular rider John Allen with a fast pace up front and unwound a powerful finish to surge past the leaders and win by a length over Stars of Carrum.

"He got a long way back, but he rounded them up in a matter of strides," said winning rider John Allen, a jumps jockey from Ireland that has become an integral part for the Weir racing team.

Extra Brut was a $100,000 Inglis Classic purchase for Spicer Thoroughbreds from the Grange Thoroughbreds draft and was a successful pinhook for Gary Mudgway, having been bought first as a weanling at the Inglis Great Southern Sale from the Stonehouse Holdings draft for $52,000.

Extra Brut the Derby HeroHe boasts the overall record of four wins from six starts with earnings of $1.4 million, a remarkable effort for a first campaign!

"It was a team effort and it was great the owners stuck solid to Johnny (John Allen)," said Darren Weir.

The fifth Group I winner for Domesday, Extra Brut is his third Derby winner joining Ruthven (Queensland Derby and Arcadia Dream (WA Derby).

He is the second winner for Dom Perion, a winning Redoute's Choice grand-daughter of French stakes-winner Charlotte Amalie. His breeder Andrew McDonald will be delighted with the achievements of Extra Brut as Dom Perion has foaled this spring producing a a full brother to him and has since been covered by Toronado (IRE).

A stunning son of Red Ransom (USA), Domesday is a proven source of Group I winners and has been super popular for Aquis at their Queensland base. He stands at a fee of $9,900.
