Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday October 30
Four juvenile heats at Randwick on Tuesday featured winners for Hinchinbrook, Smart Missile, Not a Single Doubt and Medaglia D’Oro (USA), who is the sire of a Turangga Farm homebred filly with a bright future.

Smart Consort as a yearlingThe fastest of the four winners was the Peter and Paul Snowden trained Smart Missile colt Smart Consort, a half-brother to Group III winner Sprightly Lass, stakes-winner Le Cordon Bleu and stakes-placed Stratosphere.

Third at his first trial earlier this month, Smart Consort was asked for a little more this time and surged forward to share the lead for Tommy Berry before forging clear under a hold to win the 745 metre heat by three-quarters of a length in 43.54 seconds. The Snowden stable had the next six home in this heat so have a vast battalion of babies warming up for the summer months!

A $260,000 Magic Millions purchase for Snowden Racing from the LuskinPark draft, Smart Consort runs for a syndicate that includes his co-breeder Paul Whelan of Luskin Park.

Smart Consort is the seventh named foal for former smart juvenile stakes-winner Ultimate Fever.

The Snowdens also had the first six home in the previous heat with the winner being Hinchinbrook colt Jonah, a full brother to Group III winner Flippant and half-brother to Group II winner I Am Excited from terrific producer Lady Beckworth, a half-sister to the dam of Group I stars Atlantic Jewel and Commanding Jewel.

Jonah a a yearlingJonah also improved at his second trial after finishing fourth in his first outing on October 19. He settled off the pace for Kerrin McEvoy and made good ground between runners to hit the line full of running and win his heat by a long neck in 44.71 seconds.

Sporting the China Horse Club colours, Jonah was a $300,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Newgate Farm draft for China Horse Club / WinStar Farm / Raffles Racing and is the fourth named foal from Lady Beckworth, who has foaled this spring producing a colt by I Am Invincible.

A homebred for Stuart Ramsey’s Turangga Farm, Medaglia D’Oro (USA) filly Crystal Falls is bred to be good as a half-sister to former top filly Elite Falls, a Group II winner that also placed in a Golden Slipper and Oakleigh Plate.

Prepared by John Sargent, she was a touch slow from the gates, but mustered speed quickly to track the leaders and powered through along the fence to score a three-quarter length win over a Godolphin blueblood in Exhilarates (2f Snitzel x Samaready). There was quite a gap to the third filly suggesting the first two might be above average.

Turangga Farm sold Niagara Falls at their 2017 dispersal for $70,000 , but retained Crystal Falls, who is also a half-sister to the dam of last Saturday’s Group III winner Charge.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable supplied the fourth trial winner with Not a Single Doubt filly Not a Royal Doubt looking professional at her first public outing to share the lead and kick clear to win by a couple of lengths.

A $250,000 Magic Millions purchase for MiRunners Racing No 1 from the Widden Stud draft, Not a Royal Doubt is a half-sister to four winners from Royal Pageant, a half-sister to stakes-winners Omnitrader and Stockade.
