First Stakes Winner for Toorak Toff

Mark Smith - Saturday October 13

Toorak Toff departed Rosemont Stud to Tasmania's Kingsley Park this season, but he made sure he left his old alma mater on a high note when his son Iconoclasm carried the Rosemont silks to victory in Saturday's Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield and credit his sire with his first stakes-winner.

The Darren Weir-trained 4yo was given an inspired ride by Ben Allen. After tracking the early pace, Iconoclasm took control at the 300 metres and came away to defeat Fastnet Tempest (IRE) by two and a quarter lengths with the favourite Sircconi a neck back in third. (photo Grant Courtney)

Winner of three consecutive races at Flemington in April and May Iconoclasm advances his overall record to 6 wins and 2 thirds from 11 starts with earnings of $403,865.

Rosemont's Anthony Mithen took time to reflect on Iconoclasm's dam Gold Lottey (Encosta de Lago) who died last month shortly after foaling a Choisir filly.

Winner of the Group III MVRC WH Stocks Stakes, Group III VRC The Vanity and the Listed AJC Wiggle Quality Handicap and placed in the Group 1 South Australian Oaks, Gold Lottey was purchased by Rosemont for $64,0000 at the 2012 Easter Broodmare Sale.

"He's Toorak Toff's first stakes-winner, he's a horse we bred at our farm with Ash Hardwicke, our cousin, and we've loved him from day one," Mithen said.

"We don't keep many colts but we just loved him and he's out of our beautiful old mare Gold Lottey who we lost this year foaling, which was a tragedy.

"Iconoclasm paid great tribute to his mother Gold Lottey who everyone will remember as grand old mare and fittingly a daughter (of the recently deceased) Encosta de Lago.

Mithen said he was hoping to get Iconoclasm in to the Group 1 Cantala Stakes.

"Caufield Guineas day and VRC Derby day are the two days anyone racing a horse wants to get to and it's nice to think he could race on both those days," he said.

"He'll come on from that run. It's five weeks between runs and he had an operation for an entrapped epiglottis."

Besides her Choisir filly foal, Gold Lottey leaves a 2yo full sister to Iconoclasm.

After six years at Rosemont, Group 1 ATC Golden Rose Stakes and Group 1 MRC Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner Toorak Toff (Show A Heart) is currently covering his first book at Kingsley Park at a fee of $3,850.
