In 2015 a new wave of Group One-performing colts joined the stallion rosters of Australasia's leading studs and three years on their first crop of two-year-olds are now ready to go through the auction ring.
NZB'sReady to Run Sale of Two-Year-Oldson 21 & 22 November will have representation from 17 of these sires whose yearlings were well received by buyers at Karaka 2018.
New Zealand-based sires
Windsor Park Stud'sCharm Spirit(IRE) is a high-class son of Invincible Spirit, winning six of his nine starts. He claimed back-to-back Group Ones in France before winning the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. The leading first season sire at Book 2, his progeny at Karaka sold for up to $400,000. Buyers will have the opportunity to secure seven two-year-olds catalogued in the Sale including a half-brother to Group Three winner Kingsguard (Lot 49) and the second foal out of Group Two winner and Group One performer Chaparrone (Lot 401).
The son of Fastnet Rock,El Roca(AUS), returned to stand at Westbury Stud following a racing career in Australia where he placed in the Randwick Guineas and George Ryder Stakes at Group One level. The winner of three races, including two at stakes level, sold his first crop of yearlings for up to $80,000 at Book 1. He will be represented by 10 juveniles in November includingLot 280who is out of a half-sister to Hong Kong Derby winner Super Satin andLot 423who is a half-brother to Victorian Group Two winner and Group One performer Fontelina.
Group Two Todman Stakes victorGhibellines(AUS) (Shamardal) is the latest addition to the South Island property of White Robe Lodge. The half-brother to multiple Group One winner and Australian Champion 3YO Filly Guelph was also Group Two placed in the Danehill Stakes. His first crop of yearlings sold for up to $115,000 at Karaka 2018. Another two youngsters are set to be auctioned at the upcoming two-year-old Sale with a gelding from the family of Champion 2YO Ballroom Babe (Lot 57) and a half-brother to three winners including Group Three performer Heez Born Lucky (Lot 64).
Rich Hill Stud's young recruitProisir(AUS) (Choisir) is a brother to Group One winner Divine Prophet. The winner of his first three starts, he claimed the Group Three Spring Stakes and was runner-up in the Group One Spring Champion Stakes. His first crop of yearlings sold at Karaka for up to $160,000 and buyers will have another chance to invest in his progeny with eight two-year-olds selected for the Sale. His draft includes a half-brother to NZB Filly of the Year and Group One New Zealand One Thousand Guineas runner-up Dijon Bleu (Lot 200) and a half-brother to six winners including Hong Kong stakes performer Real Specialist (Lot 292).
The son of Champion Sire O'Reilly,Sacred Falls(NZ), was unbeaten in his first six starts culminating in his first Group One win in the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas. He retired to Waikato Stud a four-time Group One winner. With 42 of his first crop yearlings sold at Book 1, buyers were attracted to the quality product paying an average of $121,500. Overall, Sacred Falls was the leading first season sire by aggregate and will be represented by a nine-horse draft in November includingLot 435who is a three-quarter brother to Hong Kong Derby Trial winner Unique Jewellery andLot 436who is a sister to dual Group One winner Maco'reilly.
With the sire himself a Group One-winning graduate of the Sale, Mapperley Stud's ill-fatedAtlante(AUS) (Fastnet Rock) will have five two-year-olds catalogued in November including a colt from the family of Hong Kong Horse of the Year Vengeance of Rain (Lot 33) and a half-brother to Group Two winner and Group One VRC Oaks runner-up Thunder Lady (Lot 298).
The Willow Glen Stud resident and Group One winnerPure Champion(IRE) (Footstepsinthesand) will have two colts withLot 143from the family of Vegas Showgirl, the dam of world champion Winx, andLot 210out of a half-sister to Group Two winner Mike.
Australian-based sires
Three of Darley Stud's Group One-winning stablemates will have progeny at the Sale with two-year-olds byBrazen Beau(AUS) (I Am Invincible),Shooting to Win(AUS) (Northern Meteor) andHallowed Crown(AUS) (Street Sense).
Brazen Beau was voted Champion 3YO Colt in Australia and his yearlings proved popular at Karaka 2018 selling on average of $130,000 at Book 1. He will have a colt atLot 192whose second dam Quarter Note is a European Group Three winner.
Caulfield Guineas winner Shooting to Win had his first crop of yearlings sell for up to $260,000 and has three lots entered for the Sale withLot 9, a colt out of a half-sister to four European stakes performers;Lot 225, a colt from the family of Australian Champion 2YO and Group One Golden Slipper winner Catbird; andLot 309who is the first foal out of a half-sister to stakes winner Soleil.
Golden Rose Stakes winner Hallowed Crown had his yearlings sell on average of $180,000 at Book 1 and will offer a colt atLot 35who is a direct descendant from stakes winner Presenting, and a colt atLot 71who is out of a half-sister to Group One winner Penny Gem.
A trio of stallions standing at Newgate Farm will also have representation at the Sale with progeny byDeep Field(AUS) (Northern Meteor),Dissident(AUS) (Sebring) andWandjina(AUS) (Snitzel).
A brother to Shooting to Win, Deep Field was a Group Two winner and the leading first season sire by average ($142,000) at Book 1. He will have eight lots on offer at the Sale includingLot 215who is half-brother to Group winner Valpolicella andLot 340who is a half-brother to Group One VRC Oaks and Vinery Stud Stakes winner Faint Perfume.
Australian Horse of the Year and Champion Sprinter Dissident had his first crop yearlings sell on average for $104,000 at Karaka and he will have six two-year-olds on offer in November includingLot 290who is a gelding from the family of New Zealand Horse of the Year Bonneval andLot 315who is a half-brother to three Group One-performed stakes winners.
Australian Guineas winner Wandjina had his yearlings sell in Book 1 for $100,000. With five juveniles selected for the upcoming Sale, his highlight lots include a son of the stakes-winning mare Lovetron (Lot 112) and a gelding from the family of Australian Champion 2YO colt The Mission (Lot 395).
The highest-rated two-year-old colt of his generation,Rubick(AUS) (Encosta de Lago) commenced duties at Coolmore Stud as a dual Group One winner. His progeny were sought after at Book 1 selling for an average of $210,000 bolstering his position as the overall leading first season sire at Karaka 2018. At the Ready to Run Sale he will have five sons on offer including a half-brother to Group Two-winning Hong Kong sprinter Beat the Clock (Lot 21) and a colt out of a half-sister to Victorian Group Three performer Spirited Eagle (Lot 371).
Swettenham Stud's European MilerToronado(IRE) (High Chaparral) was the winner of the Group One Sussex Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. His first crop of yearlings sold for up to $110,000 in Book 1 and he has sired three stakes performers in the norther hemisphere from his first crop. He will have three lots at the two-year-old Sale with a colt from the family of Australian Horse of the Year Beau Zam (Lot 174), a colt from the family of Champion 3YO Leica Guv (Lot 287) and a colt out of a half-sister to three Group winners including Group One Victoria Derby and Champagne Stakes winner Prized Icon (Lot 407).
A son of the immortal sire Galileo,Adelaide(IRE) retired to Coolmore Stud a winner of the Group One Cox Plate. His yearlings sold in Book 1 for $150,000 and he has a filly out of a sister to Coy who was stakes placed at Royal Ascot atLot 319.
