Hinchinbrook Colt Wins G2 Stutt Stakes

Tara Madgwick - Friday September 28
The loss of Yarraman Park's much loved Group I sire Hinchinbrook was highlighted at Moonee Valley on Friday night when his talented three year-old son Leonardo da Hinchi scored an explosive win in the Group II MVRC Stutt Stakes.

Trained by Darren Weir, Leonardo Da Hinchi chased home quality colt Brutal in stakes races at his last two starts and was sent out favourite for this 1600 metre assignment.

Leonardo da Hinchi as a yearlingRidden by Brad Rawiller, he was held up for a run coming into the straight, but when given clear galloping room quickly accelerated past his rivals to win by three-quarters of a length.

"He's a nice horse, but he's still pretty raw and will be better in the autumn," said Darren Weir.

"Assuming he pulls up well it will be on to the Caulfield Guineas."

A $100,000 Magic Millions Perth purchase for owner Kim Renner from the Gervase Park Stud draft, Leonardo da Hinchi runs in the same colours as his stablemate and multiple Group I winner Black Heart Bart.

He has built an impressive record with three wins and two placings from five starts and is a half-brother to stakes-placed Raeburn from good producer Portrait, a half-sister by Octagonal to Group II winner and sire Jet Spur.

Portrait was covered by Fastnet Rock's Group I winning son Awesome Rock last spring so will produce a three-quarter sibling to Leonardo da Hinchi this year.

Leonardo da Hinchi is the 15th stakes-winner for the late Hinchinbrook, whose final foals will be born this spring.
