Stakes Goals Ahead for Domesday Colt

Tara Madgwick - Sunday September 23
Promising Domesday colt Extra Brut took another step towards spring stakes goals with a tenacious victory over 1600 metres at Caulfield on Saturday in the open three year-old event.

Extra Brut - image Grant CourtneyTrained by Darren Weir, Extra Brut looked good when breaking his maiden last start beating Black Caviar's son Prince of Caviar at Sandown and stepped it up a notch in this tougher grade to win by a short half head.

With two wins and a second from just three starts, Extra Brut is entered for the Caulfield Guineas, but could get over further with races such as the Group II MRC Caulfield Classic (2000m) and Group I VRC Victoria Derby (2500m) on the radar.

"It was a good tough effort," said winning rider John Allen.

"The leader gave a good kick off the corner and he did a good job to run him down.

"At the 100-metre mark I wasn't going to get him but he really surged to last 50.

"He's a nice horse and mentally he improved a lot today from the last start.

"He should get out over a bit further. How much further, I'm not sure, but pushing forward he should be a nice enough horse."

DomesdayExtra Brut was a $100,000 Inglis Classic purchase for Spicer Thoroughbreds from the Grange Thoroughbreds draft and was a successful pinhook for Gary Mudgway, having been bought first as a weanling at the Inglis Great Southern Sale from the Stonehouse Holdings draft for $52,000.

Extra Brut is the second winner for Dom Perion, a winning Redoute's Choice grand-daughter of French stakes-winner Charlotte Amalie. His breeder will be hoping for further success from Extra Brut this spring as Dom Perion is due to foal again to his sire Domesday.

A stunning son of Red Ransom (USA), Domesday is a proven source of Group I winners and has been super popular for Aquis at their Queensland base. He stands at a fee of $9,900.
