Renowned as a sire making race, the Group I ATC Golden Rose (1400m) is the first three year-old Group I event of the new season and being worth $1million it has drawn a crackerjack field and interestingly every runner was purchased at a major Australasian yearling sale so let’s take a look at who bought what and for how much.

Many of our leading sires are represented and the field ranges in price from $45,000 for Jonker (Spirit of Boom) up to $1.3 million for Tchaikovsky (Redoute’s Choice).

The favourites are Graff (Star Witness), a $200,000 Magic Millions purchase, The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice ), a $700,000 Inglis Easter purchase, Lean Mean Machine (Zoustar), a $250,000 Magic Millions purchase and Zousain (Zoustar), a $400,000 Magic Millions purchase.

Golden Rose winner Zoustar has two top chances in this year's raceThe Golden Rose was upgraded to Group I status in 2009 and was won that year by Denman, who still stands on the Darley roster at a fee of $8,800.

Subsequent winners that have gone to stud are as follows:

2010 Toorak Toff – now standing in Tasmania at a fee of $3,850 after starting off at Rosemont Stud

 

2012 Epaulette – standing at Darley at an increased fee of $27,500 on the back of encouraging results from his first crop 2YO’s last season including South African G1 winner Soqrat and Australian G3 winners Meryl and Khulaasa

2013 Zoustar – standing at Widden Stud at increased fee of $60,500 after being crowned Champion Australian First Season Sire 2017/2018

2014 Hallowed Crown – standing at Darley at a fee of $16,500 and had his first 2YO trial winner at Cranbourne on Monday (read here)

2015 Exosphere – standing at Darley at a fee of $22,000 and has yearlings for the 2019 sales

2016 Astern – standing at Darley at a fee of $33,000 and has his first foals being born this spring
