Spring Intrigue at the Rosehill Trials

Tara Madgwick - Monday August 20
The Rosehill barrier trials on Monday morning featured a sparkling performance from last year's popular Everest winner Redzel, while there was also keen interest in the wins of rising star Pierata and a royally bred colt from Lindsay Park in Victoria that is obviously not in Sydney for a haircut.

By champion sire Fastnet Rock from champion mare More Joyous, three year-old colt More Sundays made headlines when breaking his maiden at Geelong on August 6 and is now in Sydney for a tilt at the Group I ATC Golden Rose next month.

Pierata wins the G2 MissileTrained by the Hayes / Dabernig team, More Sundays could not have been more impressive, settling at the rear of the field for Kerrin McEvoy, before rounding them all up to win going away by nearly two lengths. His time of 54.02 was the fastest of eight heats run at 895 metres.

It's a big ask to go from maiden to Group I in such a short space of time, but given his pedigree and obvious talent, why wouldn't you have a throw at the stumps.

Greg Hickman's star Pierro stallion Pierata indicated he would be a serious Everest contender with a scintillating trial that will have brought him forward again from his first up win over Kementari in the Group II ATC Missile Stakes.

He dashed clear for James McDonald to win by two and a quarter lengths in 54.75 seconds.
