Stakes Double for Teofilo and One Targets the Melbourne Cup

Mark Smith - Sunday August 5

Former Darley shuttler Teofilo (IRE) sired a stakes double in Europe overnight, which featured a gelding that may be on track for a start in the Melbourne Cup.

At Newmarket, the Charlie Fellowes-trained Crimson Rosette may have earned herself a shot at the Yorkshire Oaks following a dominant performance in the Listed Chalice Stakes (12f).

The 4yo daughter of Teofilo (IRE) had placed in the Group III Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock and the Listed Fred Archer Stakes at Newmarket before her breakthrough stakes success.

"She is a lovely, tough, sound filly and on the form of her last two starts, she was the winner. It is tough for a four-year-old to give weight to three-year-olds," Fellowes told Sporting Life.

"I'm delighted for the owner (Anthony Oppenheimer), he has been my biggest supporter and it nice to win a stakes race with a filly for him.

"That is job done now. She is in the Yorkshire Oaks. We will have a look and see."

Crimson Rosette is a half-sister to John Thompson's Listed Randwick City Stakes winner and Group III Neville Stakes winner Astronomos.

They are out of Crimson Ribbon who is a daughter of the Kingmambo stallion Lemon Drop Kid.

That is the cross that produced Teofilo's second stakes winner on the day, the Charlie Appleby-trained Cross Counter who is out of the stakes-placed Kingmambo mare Waitress.

Cross Counter took his record to 4 wins and 1 second from 6 starts when galloping his opponents into the ground with a record-breaking performance in the Group III Gordon Stakes (12f) at Goodwood. (photo Sporting Life).

The 3yo son of Teofilo (IRE) kept up a relentless gallop under William Buick to romp home four and a half lengths clear of the in-form Dee Ex Bee who was runner-up to Masar in the Group 1 Derby at Epsom and third in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris.

This was the first time Cross Counter was asked to tackle stakes company and he passed the test with flying colours.

"He is a horse that had a lovely, progressive profile going into the race today. We were confident we would put a race up to Dee Ex Bee," Appleby told Racing UK.

"On the back of that, our long-term agenda was to take him to Australia for the Melbourne Cup.

"We will get him back and see how he is, but that is where his next start is likely to be. He is a gelding so he can't run in the St Leger."

With two new stakes winners, Teofilo (IRE) takes his total to 79.

While the son of Galileo will not be returning to Australia this year we have two of his best sons in dual Group 1 winners Kermadec ($16,500 at Darley) and Palentino ($17,600 at Sun Stud).

In addition, there are two exciting sons of Galileo heading to Australia this spring, the 7-time Group 1 winning global superstar Highland Reel (IRE) ($16,500 at Swettenham Stud) and the striking, 4-time Group 1 winner, Churchill (IRE) who will stand alongside Galileo's Cox Plate-winning son Adelaide at Coolmore Stud this spring at a fee of $27,500.
