Lonhro's Soothing Rounds Out Golden Day for Godolphin

Mark Smith - Saturday August 4

Closely related to Black Caviar, Godolphin's progressive mare Soothing put up a performance that would have done the great mare proud as she scythed through the field to capture a Benchmark 78 at Randwick on Saturday and put the stamp on a golden day for the royal blue.

The 4yo daughter of Lonhro was the third winner on the day at Randwick for Godolphin who also earned a further two winners at Moonee Valley.

In the main race of the day at Randwick, the Group III Missile Stakes, Godolphin just missed with their star Lonhro colt Kementari.

Soothing looks to have come on in leaps and bounds this time in.

She opened the campaign with a two-length win on a heavy track at Warwick Farm.

With James McDonald riding for Godolphin for the first time since returning from betting related offence in December 2016, Soothing came with a weaving run to storm to a four and three-quarter length drubbing of Pedway (Not A Single Doubt) with a short-half-head to Rebel Miss (Krupt) in third. "James looked a little bit like Stephen Larkin ghosting through the backline there - when he got the spit and she burst clear," winning trainer James Cummings said.

"We are very excited about her future. She is bursting through the grades and you couldn't help but be impressed by that effort – she's won by many lengths with something in hand.

"She's still got a few ratings point up her sleeve and we will look at a couple more city wins before tackling black-type."

Soothing advances her record to 4 wins and 1 second from 9 starts with earnings of $143,175.

She is the third of five foals left by the Bel Esprit mare Dreamy before her death in March last year.

A $240,000 purchase by Woodlands Stud at the 2007 Easter Yearling Sale, Dreamy is not only by Black Caviar's sire Bel Esprit but she is out of the stakes-placed Song Of The Sun (Desert Sun) who is a three-quarter sister to Helsinge the dam of the unbeaten Black Caviar and the champion All Too hard.

The final foal of Dreamy is the 2yo Helmet colt Impassive.
