Long Shot Oaks Winner Retired

Tara Madgwick - Friday August 3
Trainer Lee Curtis has announced the retirement of his former star filly Lasqueti Spirit, who will always be remembered for her unforgettable VRC Oaks win in 2016 as a $101 chance.

Lasqueti Spirit - Grant CourtneyThe daughter of Beneteau only won the one race from her 22 starts, but it was a Group I win many will never forget.

"We planned to roll along in front, hoping to break a few and going down the back I just tried to have her in a rhythm, keep her flowing like I was at home just having a gallop around the track," winning rider Brenton Avdulla said after the race.

"I asked her to quicken at around the 1000, then again at the 800 and I was a bit surprised because I could feel her quicken.

"In the straight I was waiting to hear them coming and it didn't happen.

"At about the 100 I heard Greg Miles (broadcaster) say I was still in front and I looked up at the screen, saw the gap so I stood up and took a bow."

Lasqueti Spirit might have only won one race but she was also Group I placed in the ATC Australian Oaks and Chipping Norton Stakes and retires with earnings just shy of $1million,

A $150,000 Magic Millions purchase as a yearling, Lasqueti Spirit was raced by Frank Cook's Mystery Downs and partners.
