FOURTH SEASON CAN BE A CLUSTER LUCK
Ask any
studmaster and they'll tell you that a stallion's fourth season at stud is like
entering the Twilight Zone: that dreaded period when broodmare owners sit back
and wait to see how that stallion's first crop of 2YOs fare.
However, to paraphrase that famous trainer, Charles Dickens, it can also be the best of times for those who are prepared to back their judgement.
That was clearly the case with Spirit of Boom who covered his fourth book of mares at a fee of just $11,000 last spring, yet 19 winning first crop 2YOs later – five of them stakes winners! – the stallion will cover a massive book of mares at a fee of $55,000 in 2018.
Now Larneuk Stud is counting on classy CLUSTER to have a 'boom' of his own. And why not?
A cracking type in his own right, Cluster is by Champion Sire and sire of sires in Fastnet Rock (137 stakes winners), and is from the Flemington stakes winner Tarcoola Diamond.
Successful family? The first two dams alone have produced 13 winners from 15 to race and the pedigree emanates precocious speed.
What's more, Cluster was lightning quick: finishing second in the Group Three San Domenico in his first run at three, he was a neck third in the Group Two Stutt Stakes and capped off his career with a brilliant victory in the Group Two Theo Marks Stakes.
Better still, the acorn hasn't fallen far from the tree as he is really 'stamping' his progeny, as evidenced by the first of his yearlings selling up to $72,000 at 2018 yearling sales – 12 times service fee.
Those yearlings ended up in the good stables too: Greg Eurell, Henry Dwyer, Bryan Guy and co. … and you can rest assured they'll be targeting eligible races such as the $1 million VOBIS Sires 'The Showdown' at Caulfield next year, or the many millions on offer for other VOBIS races.

GET READY FOR THE HONOR(IUS) ROLL …
At first
flush, you might consider that HONORIUS is just the type of stallion to produce
a good stayer … and you'd probably be right.
After all, he ran third in the Group One Spring Champion (2000m) behind Dundeel, third in the Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) and second – again behind Dundeel – in the Group Three Gloaming Stakes (1800m). All up, he ran seven – yes, seven – stakes placings as a 3YO.
He then came out and won the Group Three Craven Plate (2000m) at four, along with a second in the Group Three Kingston Town (2000m) before running fourth – in successive years – in the Group Three David Jones (2000m).
Trained by Darren Weir, Honorius raced on until he was a 7YO. But the thing is, he also won twice in town at two! How's that for staying power?
Meanwhile, Honorius is by the Danehill stallion, Holy Roman Emperor, a Champion 2YO Colt, but a stallion who can count among his 75 stakes winners the likes of Hong Kong Horse of the Year and Champion Middle Distance Horse, Designs on Rome and New Zealand Horse of the Year and Champion Stayer, Mongolian Khan. What's more, he's also sired 2017 Group One winning sprinter, Sheidel and another Group One winning flyer in Rich Tapestry.
As for the other side of the pedigree, Honorius is a half brother to South African Horse of the Year and Champion Middle Distance Horse, Igugu and Ngaga, a stakes winner over 2000m in 2018.
We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Honorius's first foals this spring and have our fingers crossed they look just like dad. But you know what … you probably will end up with a stayer. Then again, who was the last owner of a Caulfield Cup winner who complained about being patient?

OH, WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A LONHRO
There's a
very good reason why Lonhro has over a dozen sons standing at stud. They work!
O'Lonhro is working too and little wonder. A cracking individual who is renowned for throwing them to type, O'Lonhro was unbeaten in his two starts as a 3YO before capping his career at four with a victory in the time honoured Group Two Chelmsford Stakes (emulating his sire and beating home Group One Doncaster Handicap winner, Triple Honour), along with a second in the Group Two Warwick Stakes.
It's a pretty good family as well … mum, Mamzelle Pedrille, was a Group Two winner in Sydney and is up close and personal with both Group One winner Diamond Drille and, wait for it, I Am Invincible (32 stakes winners). In this industry, it's not always about what you know, but who your stallion is related to!
Most importantly, O'Lonhro has gotten off to a good start at stud with his first few crops producing Mamzelle Tess, the winner of six and Group placed in May, stakes placed O'Lonera – also a 6-time winner with over half a million in the bank – O'Lonh Star (6 wins), Big Reel (6 wins), O' So Hazy (5 wins). All up … nearly 70 winners of circa $4 million.

WANT A WINNER? TIME TO CRY WOLF
You might have
heard of some of these horses … Winx, Zenyatta, Heavens Above, Whobegotyou.
Well, all of them – just like Wolf Cry – are by the super sire, Street Cry.
What about Street Boss and Per Incanto? Not as well known to be sure but are among the handful of stallion sons of Street Cry standing in Australia. Street Boss is the sire of Newmarket Handicap winner, The Quarterback, while Per Incanto is the sire of New Zealand Group One winner, Dal Cielo.
Sure, Wolf Cry hasn't had the opportunity to strut his stuff as yet – given that he retired from the track last season and has only covered the one quality book of mares. However, all the signs of a successful career at stud are there.
A $320,000 yearling, Wolf Cry was a speedy youngster whose only four starts at two yielded three stakes placings: the Breeders' Plate, Lonhro Plate and, in the important Golden Slipper leadup, the Group Two Skyline Stakes where he finished third behind subsequent Group One Golden Rose Stakes winner, Exosphere.
Wolf Cry is one of two stakes horses from the multiple stakes placed Redoute's Choice 2YO, Starfish, in turn a daughter of the Group One winning sprinter, Stella Cadente. Starfish is also a half sister to stakes winning 2YO, Brillaint Bisc, but even more notably, this is the famous Eau D'Etoile family: an incredible source of precocious talent such as Golden Slipper winner, Bint Marscay, Sheraton, Mannington, Bollinger, Benicio and co., but notably also renowned for Group One winners and Group producing sires, Filante and Kenny's Best Pal.
