Coolmore based Rubick (Encosta de Lago) and Newgate Farm's Deep Field (Northern
Meteor)head the market at $3 and $3.20 with Darley's Brazen Beau (I Am
Invincible) next at $5 followed by Australian Horse of the Year Dissident (Sebring), also
from Newgate Farm at $7.50.Not far behind are Darley's Shooting to Win (Northern Meteor) and Newgate based Wandjina (Snitzel) at $11.
A brilliant speed horse from the family of Redoute's Choice, Rubick is closely related to Manhattan Rain, the sire of Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign. He had a first foal crop numbering 158 and his yearlings have gone into many of the leading stables and sold for up to $470,000.
By Northern Meteor, the sire of this year's Champion Australian First Season Sire Zoustar, Deep Field has a numerical advantage of over Rubick with his first crop featuring 190 foals which is the biggest of all of these first season sires. His yearlings were in hot demand at the sales and sold for up to $675,000. He was the leading first season sire by average at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale where 39 of his stock averaged $219,231.
Brazen Beau is the first son to go to stud of red hot sire I Am Invincible, who
was the Champion Australian First Season Sire of his year and is now pressing
hard to be Champion Sire on the general list. With just 86 foals in his first
crop, Brazen Beau is giving away a massive start to some of his peers in terms
of numbers, but they sold for up to $700,000, so the quality is there.Dissident has the numbers to be more than competitive with a first crop of 152 and it might be worth remembering his own sire Sebring had 16 first crop winners and Dissident himself was a slick two year-old that won a Listed MRC Blue Diamond Preview on debut. His yearlings sold for up to $800,000.
If you fancy Deep Field, then you should also look at Shooting to Win, who is his full brother, albeit a better performed one having won the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas where as Deep Field was only a Group II winner. Shooting to Win has a first foal crop of 118 and his yearlings sold for up to $340,000.
A $1million yearling that achieved Group I success on the track, Wandjina has a foal crop of 106 and his yearlings sold for up to $360,000 this year. Newgate Farm's other Group I winning Snitzel son Sizzling has sired nine first crop winners this season and they will be hoping for similar or better success for Wandjina.
