The Futures Bright for Rosemont's Starcraft Filly

Mark Smith - Saturday July 28

The imported mare Wild Mia (USA) is the gift that keeps on giving for Anthony Mithen's Rosemont Stud.

A black-type winner at Calder at two, the daughter of Wildcat Heir was purchased by Vin Cox Bloodstock on behalf of Rosemont in 2010.

At three she won a pair of Allowance races at Arlington and Keeneland where she carried the red and white Rosemont silks to a five-length win and then finished second in the Grade II Mrs. Revere Stakes at Churchill Downs.

At four she won the Listed Hollywood Park Redondo Beach Stakes and at five placed in the Grade II Santa Ana Stakes at Santa Anita, the Grade II Buena Vista Stakes on the same track and the Grade III Monrovia Stakes.

Before she was retired to the paddocks at Rosemont, Wild Mia (USA) made three starts in Australia but had clearly not acclimatised.

Her broodmare career got off to a rocky start when slipping to Toorak Toff in 2012 and High Chaparral in 2013.

In 2014 Wild Mia had her first foal, a daughter of Rosemont's resident stallion Starcraft.

A grey like her dam, the Starcraft filly named Wild Flyer made her first start at Geelong on July 15, finishing second behind the highly regarded Dundeel filly The Closer.

Showing she had come on leaps and bounds, Wild Flyer opened her winning account in Saturday's $150,000 VOBIS Gold Ingot (1400m) at Caulfield.

Ridden by Damien Thornton for trainer Henry Dwyer, Wild Flyer raced on the outside of the pacesetting favourite Social Spin before taking control on the turn the safely holding the challenge of Ruban Bleu (Artie Schiller) by three-quarters of a length with D'Grammy (Medaglia d'Oro) a length back in third. Thornton said he had no doubt the filly had made huge improvement from her debut second.

"She really didn't handle the soft track (at Geelong) and only just got run down late so I knew she would improve on top of the ground, he said.

"She's improved six lengths, I knew she would."

Henry Dwyer said it was a great result winning a rich VOBIS Gold event that returned her owners over $100,000.

"It's good prizemoney and a terrific scheme. She's a homebred filly for a good Victorian breeder who bought the mare in America so it's a terrific result for all concerned," Dwyer said.

"We always thought she was going to improve significantly next time.

"We were tempted to add the blinkers today, but I thought it is all ahead of her so it's no time to be jamming her down at this stage.

"She probably surprised me by winning. Her gallop on Tuesday was pretty good but not the sign of a filly that has leapfrogged from her first run. I came here thinking that if she can run well that will be great and she can go to the paddock, but she obviously showed the benefit of that run and she couldn't have done any more."

Dwyer said they might have run out of time to aim for races like the 1000 Guineas.

"If we do that we would just give her a freshen up and keep going or we tip her out and aim at the autumn," he said.

Wild Mia (USA) has a yearling filly by Starspangledbanner named Sodalicious, a weanling colt by Fastnet Rock and was bred back to Starcraft again last season.

A Group 1 winner in four countries, Starcraft covered 101 mares last season, his most in six years.

Hugely popular in Hong Kong, Starcraft will stand at an unchanged fee of $8,800 at Rosemont Stud this year.
