72nd Group 1 winner for Galileo

Mark Smith - Sunday July 15

The win of Kew Gardens in Saturday's Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris (14f) at Longchamp credited Galileo with his 72nd winner at the highest level, just one short of his own sire Sadler's Wells and inching closer to the total of 84 left by the dual hemisphere phenomenon Danehill.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained colt defeated Neufbosc (Mastercraftsman) by one and a quarter lengths with Dee Ex Bee (Farhh) three lengths back in third.

Fresh off his win on US Navy Flag in the Darley July Cup, Ryan Moore made the trip to Longchamp to partner the 3yo colt in his most important win to date.

A last start winner of the Group II Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot, the son of Galileo (photo Mark Smith) advances his record to 4 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third from 10 starts with earnings of €549,605.

"We're delighted with him, the plan was to come here and then maybe if everything went well we may have a look at the King George," O'Brien told At The Races.

"We wanted to come back to a mile and a half before we went to the King George, obviously he won over a mile and six in Ascot.

"You couldn't be happier with him. Ryan took his time on him and rode him for pace. He quickened up well and was brave at the end.

"He's a very progressive colt, he's progressed lovely since his last run."

Bred by Barronstown Stud, Kew Gardens is out of Desert King's Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes-winning daughter Chelsea Rose who is also the dam of the Group III Prix de Ris-Orangis winner Thawanny (Tamayuz)
