Great Southern Gems from Etak Thoroughbreds

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday June 12
New South Wales owner/ breeder Kate Nivison of Etak Thoroughbreds is looking forward to the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale which has proven a fruitful option for her breeding enterprise in the past with seven cracking youngsters set to add to her success at Oaklands next week.

Stakes-placed Problem Solver was bred and sold by Etak ThoroughbredsKate has grown up in a family renowned throughout the thoroughbred industry with Etak Thoroughbreds born out of a desire to continue that legacy.

The Nivison's have had a great impact on breeding and racing with high profile horses such as Tar Girl and At Sea and they were also instrumental in administration in NSW Country Racing.

But successful breeding and racing didn't just come from her father's side as her mother Jill Nivison and her family also raced and bred champion racehorses, including Baguette, Whisked and Vionnet.

Jill bred Golden Slipper winner Inspired and in more recent years enjoyed success with Tie the Knot, Spinning Hill and Fashion News who she bred and raced in partnership with her brother Sandy Tait.

"I just want to breed racehorses," said Kate Nivison, who has been selling weanlings for the past nine years.

"My mares are a combination of ones descended from both my Dad and my Mum's families as well as mares that I have either purchased as yearlings or as broodmares.

"I love selling and a few years ago Vin Cox and Garry Cuddy convinced me to focus on selling weanlings and it's proven a good result.

"I don't own a farm and have no desire to, so it lessens my risk. I have chosen to target the Great Southern in recent years as a lot of trainers buy at that sale.

"At the moment I believe it's the best place for me and I have had great results down at Oaklands for both me and the buyers of my horses going forward."

Last year's Etak Thoroughbreds weanlings sold at Inglis Great Southern included a colt by Uncle Mo (USA) from New Style that made $50,000 and was then sold at the Magic Millions in January for $200,000 to Domeland Pty Ltd.

Other successful pinhooks included a Husson (Arg) filly from Lohan sold for $26,000 that made $57,500 at Inglis Classic, a Rubick filly from Sweet Revenge sold for $25,000 that made $70,000 at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale and a Foxwedge filly from Defrock (in partnership with Jilly Henderson) that made $80,000 and then was re-offered at Inglis Premier to make $200,000.

Aside from the pinhooking success, notable racehorses bred and sold by Etak Thoroughbreds include Group II winner Nicoscene and Group I placed Essence as well as Crown Lawyer, Brazen. So You Know, Cisco Bay Elegant Queen, Nic's Vendetta and Problem Solver, who won the Magic Millions maiden this year.

Etak Thoroughbreds will offer the seven weanlings below all consigned by Shadwell Farm as agent.

"Shadwell Farm only sell weanlings so they are a great fit for what we are doing," Kate Nivison added.

"Also having people like Jilly Henderson from Noogee Park raising my horses has helped me breed a better product. This year my weanlings were prepped jointly by Noogee Park and Fulmen Park ."
