Group III Win in Japan for Son of King's Rose

Mark Smith - Monday June 11

In the news as the sire of Saturday's Group 1 winner The Autumn Sun, Arrowfield Stud's breed-shaper Redoute's Choice featured in another role at Tokyo on Sunday as the sire of the dam of the Group III Epsom Cup (1800m) winner Satono Arthur.

The son of Deep Impact and the Group 1 winning mare King's Rose, Satono Arthur won both his stats at two.

Despite beginning his 3yo season with a pair of Group III seconds, he went winless in six starts and displayed stamina limitations in the Group 1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) and Group 1 Kikuka Sho (St Leger), although he did manage a third to the Derby winner Rey De Oro in the Group II Kobe Shimbun Hai (2400m) at Hanshin.

Dropped back to 1600 metres for his 2017 finale in the Listed Rigel Stakes, Satono Arthur just missed when second to Red en Ciel.

Following his run of outs, Satono Arthur captured the Listed Rakuyo Stakes over 1600 metres at Kyoto at his seasonal bow in February before prepping for the Epsom Cup with a third in the May Stakes (1800m) at Tokyo.

His overall record advances to 4 wins, 3 seconds and 2 thirds from 11 starts with earnings of $A1,672,285.

King's Rose, who won the Group 1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas in 2010 for Jason Bridgman.

When switched to Peter Moody, the daughter of Redoute's Choice won at Group II level at her first two starts before four Group 1 placings with narrow seconds in the Group I Toorak Handicap and Emirates' Stakes and thirds to Ofcourseican in the Group I Coolmore Classic and the Queen Of The Turf Stakes to More Joyous.

Bred and raced by Hong Kong-based Dr Gene Tsoi, King's Rose was sold to Japan as a broodmare prospect and she has been a regular visitor to Deep Impact.

She has a yearling colt (pictured ) by the champion stallion who has been catalogued by Northern Farm to the upcoming JHRA Select Sale (Lot 21).
