Can Tavistock Win Another Derby?

Media Release - Friday June 8

A wide barrier poses a significant challenge to former New Zealand-trained galloper Lucky For All when he tackles Saturday's Group I Queensland Derby (2200m) at Doomben for trainer Darren Weir.

Lucky for All - Bruno CanatelliPrior to a luckless seventh at Sandown last start, when restricted for room for the length of the straight, Lucky For All was previously unbeaten in three Australian starts.

The Tavistock gelding, formerly named Lucky For Some, began his career in New Zealand under the guidance of Roger Lang, where he ran fourth at Thames over 1200 metres back in January.

Identified by bloodstock agent Lenny Russo, in conjunction with Mick Sharkie of Spicer Thoroughbreds, the duo purchased the horse for a syndicate after that eye-catching performance and he hasn't looked back under the guidance of Weir.

"It's going to be hard for Lucky For All from barrier 19," Weir said.

"He's going to need a great ride and will probably have to go back which is going to make it hard at Doomben.

"I guess the only thing is by race seven they might be running on out wide," Weir said.

With Doomben rated a Heavy8 on Friday morning, with no further rain forecast, the track is expected to improve slightly on Saturday.

Damian Lane, who was aboard stablemate and race rival Heavenly Thought when winning the Gr.3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) last start, has elected to ride Lucky For All with Brad Rawiller to ride Heavenly Thought.

Lucky For All's sire Tavistock has already sired Derby winners Werther, Tarzino, Infantry and Tavago. – NZ Racing Desk
