One to Watch – Sale

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday May 30
Back in the days when I was a Saturday regular at the Sydney races one of my fall back bets to get out of jail was slick Melbourne filly Elite Elle, so when her first foal scored an impressive win at Sale today it was always going to be the 'One to Watch'.

Smart MissileContinuing the hot run of her sire Smart Missile, two year-old filly Propelle was a close and unlucky fourth on debut at Sandown on May 16 and quickly made amends for that defeat.

The Matt Ellerton and Simon Zahra trained filly sat behind the leaders and zoomed away from her rivals to win the 1000 metre maiden by more the three lengths.

Retained to race by her breeders, who also raced Elite Elle, Propelle is the first foal and first winner for her dam, who won seven races highlighted by a stakes victory in the Listed MRC Quezette Stakes.

A daughter of outstanding shuttle sire Shamardal (USA), Elite Elle has a weanling filly by Deep Field and was covered by Zoustar last spring.

Propelle wasn't the only winner for Smart Missile on Wednesday with the Mark Newnham trained Gooree Stud homebred Sweet Victory scoring at Warwick Farm, her third win from seven starts.

Now standing at Twin Hills down at Cootamundra at a fee of $13,200, Smart Missile has had an outstanding May reeling off 24 winners since the start of the month, a figure bettered only by I Am Invincible.
