Promising Debut for Black Caviar's Son Prince Of Caviar

Mark Smith - Saturday May 26

Obviously, there was great interest in the career debut of Black Caviar's son Prince Of Caviar in the Ladbrokes Back Yourself Handicap (1200m) at Sandown on Saturday and while he didn't win, he showed he has a future with a fast-finishing fourth.

Ridden by Luke Nolen for Team Hawkes, Prince Of Caviar (photos Grant Courtney ) settled back last of the 10 starters.

The son of Sebring was doing his best work in the final 200 metres to finish four and a quarter lengths from the winner Scottish Rogue.

Prince of Caviar is the second foal of Black Caviar who was unbeaten in 25 starts.

Black Caviar's first foal, the filly Oscietra (Exceed And Excel), was recently retired after a 5-start career that yielded two wins and a third.

Nolen, who rode Black Caviar in 22 of her wins, said there was plenty of merit in Prince Caviar's debut.

"If you don't look at the pedigree page you would say it was a terrific run for a first timer," Nolen told AAP.

"He's probably got some unfair pressure on him but I think he'll shape up as a three-year-old next autumn."

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said the two-year-old colt would now be spelled before returning in the spring.

"He saddled up perfect, he came into the yard perfect and just got a bit jig-joggy before Luke got on him," Hawkes said.

"They're all big things as a trainer you look at from an attitude point of view.

"He had shown all those things at home but I've been in this situation before where you bring big expensive colts to the races and they are a mess come race time because they've lost the plot.

"He's got a great attitude, he listens to you and I'm really happy with what he's done."

Black Caviar has a yearling filly by Snitzel and a weanling filly by More Than Ready (USA). She was covered by I Am Invincible last spring.

The winner of the race, the Tony McEvoy-trained Scottish Rogue, was coming off a maiden win at Pakenham at his fifth start and his jockey Luke Currie said his manners have improved with racing.

"He won well last time being held up but today he drew wide and the idea was to be positive. He did the work early and then he was really strong late, Currie told racing.com.

"He's a bit of a fizzy bugger so Tony' has taken his time with him and put blinkers on and blinkers off. We've tried a few different things with him and he's getting better with racing."

The son of Rothesay was purchased by First Light Racing / McEvoy Mitchell Racing / Paul Willets Bloodstock for $45,000 out of the Glenlogan Park draft at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

A half-brother to the Listed ATC Keith McKay Handicap winner Shoboard (Show A Heart), Scottish Rogue is the final foal of the Volksraad mare Ten Eighty a sister to the Group 1 winner Star Satire who is the dam of the Group II winners and Group 1 placed Satin Shoes and Zarzuela.
