Karaka 2026 – The Sire and Vendor Break Up

Tara Madgwick - Monday November 17

Flying the G1 flag for Kiwi-breds in Australia this spring have been Ceolwulf, Jimmysstar, Mr Brightside, Globe and of course the world’s best sprinter Ka Ying Rising, so we’re busting to take a look at the sire and vendor break up for the 2026 Karaka Books 1 and 2.

Satono Aladdin (Jpn) and Proisir lead the way with 54 entries apiece for Book 1 and the former is the overall most represented sire this year when you take in Book 2 entries.

Both of these stallions are based at Rich Hill Stud and both have hit the point in their stud career when the racetrack deeds of their offspring are catching up to the sale ring.

Satono Aladdin (Jpn)

This crop of yearlings by Satono Aladdin are the first conceived at his bigger fee of $45,000, so in theory are his best bred crop of yearlings and they follow on from a big crop of yearlings sold in 2025 that are now 2YOs.

Satono Aladdin had 29 yearlings sell in Book 1 in 2025 at an average $170,690 and they went into the best stables, so expect the second wave of success for Satono Aladdin to begin unfolding in 2026.

Proisir

Proisir is another sire playing catch up and this crop of yearlings were conceived when his fee jumped from $17,500 to $70,000… that’s a big jump and the massive increase in quality of mares covered will be reflected in the sale ring in January.

Profondo

Third on the list is Windsor Park Stud’s Australian bred Group I winner Profondo, who like Satono Aladdin is a son of Japanese breed shaper Deep Impact.

The drums have been beating on Profondo for some time now as you might expect for a horse that was bred at Arrowfield and topped the 2020 Magic Millions Yearling Sale selling for $1.9million.

He’s a first season sire that has been given a great opportunity and Aussie buyers are going to be looking very closely as to what he has to offer.

Waikato Stud are the overall leading vendor by numbers in Book 1 and two edging out Cambridge Stud, although the latter have slightly more Book 1 yearlings with 58 on offer reflecting their decision to sell their entire draft in New Zealand in 2025.

Their consignment includes 11 yearlings from the second crop of their exciting young sire Sword of State, whose first runner in Australia is the spring stakes-winner Torture.

An obvious highlight will be Lot 513, the half-brother by Sword of State to four time G1 winenmr and $10million earner Ceolwulf.
