Doubtland’s Blaze Away Gives Trainer Claire Patterson First City Winner

Dane Squance - Wednesday November 12

Having just his fourth career start, progressive 3yo Doubtland gelding Blaze Away recorded consecutive wins, pulling clear to win the fourth race of the day at Caulfield on Wednesday, MRC The Big Screen Company Handicap (1100m), giving his trainer Claire Patterson her first city winner.

When the gates crashed back, jockey Lachlan King allowed the gelding to find his feet early from barrier one, working forward to settle in fifth position with the Tony and Calvin McEvoy trained Excenia pushing forward to take up the running as the punter’s second elect.

Race favourite Chergui was forced to race three wide under Craig Williams, but the Godolphin owned gelding showed plenty of fight, heading the leaders in the straight while Blaze Away had found a gap along the rails as I’mateez worked down the outside after coming from the tail of the field.

As Blaze Away showed some strong acceleration under King, the gelding surged to the lead, but it looked as in I’mateez would make it interesting in the run to the line, but it wasn’t to be as the Claire Patterson trained gelding pulled clear to score by a length.

I’mateez finished in second in what was a good effort by the Capitalist half-brother to Champion Imperatiz, while Chicago Blues who had found trouble getting a clear run, worked home well for third, a length and a quarter from the runner up.

Taking his record to two wins and a third from four starts, the gelding looks a promising runner for Patterson, who only trained her first winner in September last year.

Bred by South Australia’s Mr JA Stephens, Blaze Away is the first runner, and winner out of the Street Boss mare Fizzle Dizzle who has a 2yo full brother to Blaze Away, and a yearling filly by the Group 2-winning, multiple Group 1 placed Dalasan.

Blaze Away is one of 11 individual winners for Doubtland who stands at Widden Victoria at a fee of $13,200 (inc. GST).
