Vale, Don Storey

Media Release - Wednesday May 16
Mr Don Storey, 86, one of New South Wales' most prominent owner-breeder and racing administrators, passed away on Tuesday.

"Don Storey was a highly-respected person not just as an owner and breeder, but also as a racing administrator and businessman," said Racing NSW's Chief Executive, Mr Peter V'landys AM.

"Don's passion for the industry was unwavering and his contribution to the New South Wales Racing Industry has been remarkable. He was extremely popular in all circles and the term nature's gentleman could not be more appropriate.

"Don will be greatly missed and our thoughts go out to his extended family and friends."

Don Storey and wife Val were regulars on Sydney racecourses for decades with their familiar colours of yellow and black quarters frequently carried to victory.

Don was a Board Member on Sydney Turf Club for 31 years (1970-2001) and he also served as Vice-Chairman, with the Club honouring him with Life Membership in 1980.

$1.5 million earner Rain Affair was a star performer for Don StoreyDon and Val owned star colt Been There who captured the 1982 Silver Slipper Stakes before running into the outstanding Sir Dapper, finishing placings behind that horse in the Golden Slipper Stakes and Spring Champion Stakes.

Mr Storey also owned the flying Rain Affair (12 wins including six Group races) and part-owned Boasting (third to Marauding in the 1987 Golden Slipper).

Fittingly, Mr Storey's last runner, Blazeray, was a winner at Hawkesbury last Thursday breaking through for his first victory in nine attempts.

Funeral service details are yet to be finalised.
