Declaration of War Colt Wins French 2,000 Guineas

Tara Madgwick - Monday May 14
War Front's Group I winning son Declaration of War (USA) shuttled to Australia for two seasons for Coolmore and has been making news overnight as the sire of classy colt Olmedo, winner of the Group I Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp.

Trained by Jean-Claude Rouge, Olmedo showed potential last year at two with a debut victory at Deauville followed by two seconds in Group races including the Group I Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.

Declaration of WarSecond on his seasonal return in the Group III Prix de Fontainebleau to highly rated Wootton, Olmedo stepped it up a notch to score a strong finishing neck win in the one mile feature leaving Wootton in fourth place.

"Olmedo had some acceleration to chase the leaders down from there and it's not easy here when they get away in front. He'll go to the Jockey Club next, there isn't much choice. That's his race rather than the St James's Palace," said his trainer.

Olmedo was a €100,000 purchase from the Arqana August V2 Sale in 2016 and is the best of four stakes winners for Declaration Of War, who started his Northern Hemisphere stud career for Coolmore in Ireland before switching to Ashford Stud in Kentucky.

Olmedo is from the winning Pivotal mare Super Pie, who comes from the family of Group II winner Super Celebre.

The oldest Australian progeny for Declaration of War are two year-olds.
