Blue Gum Farm’s Flying Artie has a very strong crop of three year-olds running for him this season and a promising filly that can call $10million earner Fangirl ‘Aunt FannyG’ was his latest winner when scoring at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
The Chris Waller trained Surf’s Up had shown nice ability placing in her first three starts, most recently finishing second to highly regarded filly Cantiamo at Warwick Farm at the start of the month.
Given a perfect ride by Zac Lloyd, she kicked away to win the rich $100,000 1200m super maiden by nearly two lengths as favourite.
“She was very good first up and had a beautiful ride from Zack today. He put her in a beautiful spot from a really tricky draw, and that I think that was the winning move,” said Waller.
“It's never easy to run Nash (Rawiller on runner-up Mrs Maree) down, he's always a good judge of pace and he got a good break on the field, but she pinned her ears back, as we say, and she reeled in the leader and it was a good win.”
Surf’s Up now has a win and three placings from four starts with prizemoney topping $85,000 and for a filly with her pedigree a bit of Black Type would be the goal.
Bred by the Ingham family and foaled and raised at Coolmore, she is a half-sister to Group II placed Cigar Flick and is the second living foal and second winner from Palmateer, a metro winning half-sister by Fastnet Rock to four time Group I winner Fangirl.
Palmateer has a yearling filly by Justify (USA) and is due to foal to Zoustar, while her two-year old filly by Street Boss (USA) has been named Palm Tree and is currently in work with Chris Waller.
Surf’s Up is the 11th winner from the current 3YO crop by Flying Artie and they include last start Group III winner Sixties, who runs in the Group I ATC Golden Rose this Saturday.
A Group I winner and Group I producing sire, Flying Artie stands at the very affordable fee of $11,000 this spring.
