Flying Spur Heads to Horse Heaven

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday May 9
Arrowfield Stud have announced via Twitter that their much loved retired champion sire Flying Spur has passed away at age 25.

Twitter - We are deeply saddened to announce the death overnight of our beloved Champion Sire, Flying Spur (1992-2018). One of the pillars of Arrowfield, he signs off like the great Australian Sir Donald Bradman on 99 stakeswinners.

Flying SpurA triple Group I winner that won the 1995 STC Golden Slipper and then the VRC Australian Guineas and AJC All Aged Stakes at three, Flying Spur was bred by Arrowfield Stud and raced in their colours.

He retired to stud in 1996, and served his first season in Victoria, but it was not long before he was back in the Hunter Valley with early horses to put him on the map including All Time High, French Braids, Ponton Flyer and Spurn.

His tally of Group I winners includes last year's Caulfield Cup winner Boom Time, Golden Slipper winner Forensics and outstanding miler Mentality.

Flying Spur has several sire sons at stud including Group I winners Magnus and Casino Prince, who is the sire of All Too Hard.

As a broodmare sire, Flying Spur has been nothing short of sensational siring the dams of 76 stakes-winners including Golden Slipper winner and leading sire Sebring.

One of the very best sons of Danehill (USA), Flying Spur has left a powerful legacy that will see his name remembered for many years to come.

"Somewhere…somewhere in time's own space
There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some Paradise where horses go.
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again."
– Stanley Harrison
