One to Watch – Warrnambool

Tara Madgwick - Monday September 22

So You Think is the first sire to hit 40 winners for the season and he did it with a three year-old filly that won easily on debut at Warrnambool on Monday in the Kia Ora Stud colours.

Trained by Mitch Freedman and ridden by Dean Yendall, Savitri raced on the pace near the fence and when she got balanced in the straight let down with a big finish to charge clear and win the 1200m maiden by two and a half lengths.

Passed in as a yearling, Savitri was retained to race by Kia Ora and sent to Freedman, who is grateful for the opportunity to prepare such a well bred filly.

“We've always thought that she's had good talent. She came here today with plenty of upside and plenty to learn, but it’s good to see her get the win on the board,” said Mitch Freedman.

“It was never had intention to lead, but you know he's (Dean Yendall) a good rider, so summed up the situation and just flowed with her. She got her head on her and chest kicked away at the top of the straight.

“She's got a lot a bit to learn, and she's going to be better over further, but she's a very nice filly, and there's a reason why you get these three-year-olds at this time of year and we thought that she fitted that bill.”

Savitri is the first foal of Revolutionary Girl, a winning half-sister by Epaulette to stakes-winner Warpath, the dam of Group II winner Positive Peace with this family producing a smart winner at the official 2YO trials at Randwick this morning in Masvingo (2f Zoustar x Rotator), read about her here.

“She’s just really learning and developing and needs to channel her energy in the right way, because she can be a little bit wayward at times, but the team have done a great job managing her and it’s a privilege to race a horse in those colours,” Freedman added.

“Kia Ora have got just a fantastic record of breeding good horses. They're very hard to buy, but it's even better when they can send you one and you don't have to put the money on the table.

“They've sent us this horse and entrusted her to us and hopefully we can reward them in the future.”
