Spring Trial Watch – Everest Contenders on Show

The Rosehill trials on Thursday morning featured a couple of key Everest contenders with Private Harry winning easily over speedy 3YO North England, while Lady Shenandoah was under a tight grip to finish third in a later heat.

It was the second trial back for Private Harry and the Nathan Doyle trained four year-old Harry Angel (IRE) stallion was doing it easily. He led all the way for Ash Morgan, who has ridden this horse in every single race and trial he’s ever had and they are yet to taste defeat.

This 900m heat was won by 7YO Coastwatch, who went to the lead and set a good pace with Lady Shenandoah beginning quickly, but restrained to follow under a hold. She was never let go, while Swiftfalcon looks to have come back well and hit the line strongly for second.

The son of Exceedance was tried out to 2000m last preparation, which is a trip he doesn’t quite get, but if he’s kept to sprints and possibly a mile this time he could have a very good spring.

Lady Shenandoah was invincible at three winning all five of her starts last season, but only one of them was in a race shorter than 1400m, so to target the Everest over 1200m against older sprinters will be a completely different ballgame.

Some of the other heats are worth taking a look at not so much for the winners but the horses that followed them home with several high profile Waller trained colts on show in Autumn Boy, Hidden Achievement and also Central Coast ( did accept for G3 Up and Coming, but obviously trialling instead).
