Too Darn Hot Mare Claims Third G1

Tara Madgwick - Monday August 4

Too Darn Hot (GB) will be a returning superstar to Darley NSW this spring and there is no doubt he can get an exceptional horse with Fallen Angel capturing her third Group I in France on Sunday when taking out the G1 Prix Rothschild (1m) at Deauville.

A Group I winner at two and three for the Karl Burke stable, Fallen Angel was dispatched to France off a third at Royal Ascot behind Crimson Advocate. In the Group II Duke of Cambridge Stakes.

She showed remarkable courage when headed by race favourite January (3YO Kingman filly trained by Aidan O’Brien), fighting back for Daniel Tudhope to score a tenacious head victory, her first win in the Wathnan Racing colours.

Fallen Angel was bred by Steve Parkin’s Branton Court Stud and was retained to race initially before being sold to Wathnan Racing after she won the Group I Irish Thousand Guineas last year.

She has the overall record of five wins and three placings from 11 starts and Danny Tudhope has been on her in all three of her G1 wins.

"Fallen Angel is a superstar. I haven't ridden her since last year when we won the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She means a lot to me and the team as well, that's three Group 1s now as a two-year-old, three-year-old and now as a four-year-old,”  he said.

“It's amazing and I have to thank the Wathnan team for giving me the chance to get back on her. She has a good mind on her, a great mentality. Karl [Burke, trainer] always says she never shows a lot at home but she obviously saves it for the track and it's a great day for us all.”

Karl Burke will now look to target another G1 with Fallen Angel.

“She only does what you ask her to do and Aidan's filly (January)coming to her helped her. What I'm really pleased about is that she's emulated Laurens in winning a Group 1 at two, three and four now,” Burke said.

“The Matron (G1) I would imagine is the next port of call and hopefully we'll have some nice ground at that time of year. There is the mile and a quarter Prix Jean Romanet but we'll enjoy today, get her home and see how she is, and then I'll speak to connections, but the way she's won that I'd be happy to stick at a mile.”

Pedigree

Fallen Angel is a half-sister to stakes-placed Divine Jewel from Group II winning Lawman mare Agnes Stewart and is the final foal of the mare, who was a half-sister to stakes-winner Sorrel from the family of Group I winner Definite Article.

Too Darn Hot is the reigning Champion Second Season Sire in Australia and his fee this spring is set at $275,000.
