Juvenile Trial Watch – Rosehill

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday July 15

There were six heats won by juveniles at the Rosehill trials on Tuesday morning and they included a couple of promising horses that have already proven their stripes in stakes company, plus an unraced youngster by in form sire Flying Artie.

The Brad Widdup trained Hellbent filly Savvy Hallie ended her initial campaign still surprisingly a maiden, but with three seconds from four starts in elite company she won’t stay that way for long.

Savvy Hallie chased home subsequent Group III winner King of Pop on debut at Warwick Farm before finishing fifth in the Group II Reisling Stakes behind Tempted and she then followed up with seconds in the Group III ATC Baillieu (1400m) to Nepotism and then the Group II ATC Percy Sykes Stakes again behind Tempted… that is A grade form.

She looked happy to be back racing again this morning, jumping smartly to go through and lead for Jay Ford and skipped along on the bridle all the way with ears pricked to win by three-quarters of a length in a canter.

The third dam of Savvy Hallie is Group I New Zealand Oaks winner Savannah Success, the dam of Cox Plate winning champion sire Savabeel, so don’t be surprised if this girl can stretch her speed a little beyond the 1200m and the Darley Princess Series would look a logical plan.

Also from the Brad Widdup stable is Farnan colt Nashville Jack, who was having his second trial back this prep and has now won both of them following an initial prep where he contested the Group II ATC Silver Slipper and Group III Canberra Black Opal Stakes running fourth and fifth. He jumped well for Alysha Collett and then took a sit back off the leaders before powering home in the straight under a hold to win by a long neck.

Also keep a close watch on Wootton Bassett (GB) colt West of Swindon, who showed immense talent with a second in the $1million ATC Golden Gift and then second in the Group II ATC Silver Slipper before he had foot issues that seriously impacted his prep and while he did run in the Golden Slipper, it was hardly an indication as he never got into the race and finished unplaced.

He was subsequently removed from the Hawkes stable and is now with Ciaron Maher and this was his first trial back.

We had a first look at the Chris Waller trained Flying Artie colt Skyglider, who turned in quite an un-Waller like first trial with Adam Hyeronimus on board. Unlike the usual ’go back and find cover’ that we expect to see, Skyglider went forward to share the lead three wide and was shaken up to go on and win by a length and a half over a promising Maher trained colt in Stormland.

A stylish debut winner at Randwick, Stormland was then tried in the Group III ATC Kindergarten Stakes where he led them up after going quite hard only to drop out over the final furlong, but he definitely has talent.

A $100,000 Magic Millions Book 2 purchase from Baramul Stud, Skyglider is the first foal of a winning half-sister to stakes-winner Affable, the dam of stakes-winner Agreeable from the family of dual Group I winner Turffontein. It is very much what you would term a running / winning family and hard not to see Skyglider adding to the tally.

Additional heat winners were: Steel Knight (Capitalist), Vivian’s Express (Capitalist) and Clear Blue Day (Blue Point (IRE).
