Begg Bred Siblings Make for a Winning Double

Tara Madgwick - Monday July 7

Former Group I jockey and now emerging country trainer Danny Beasley produced his first winning double at Wagga on Monday and he did it with a pair of first time winning siblings that are both bred and raced by the legendary Neville Begg.

First to salute was two year-old filly Serenading, who beat older rivals to win the 1000m maiden on debut and she is by the Neville Begg bred and Grahame Begg trained Champion 2YO Colt Written By.

Serenading had one quiet trial previously, but did best in the heavy 10 conditions for Jeff Penza to win by a head.

In the very next race, Serenading’s older three year-old half-brother by Star Witness, Donegal Bay, also broke the ice scoring over 1200m as favourite.

Placed twice in Victoria when trained by Grahame Begg, Donegal Bay was transferred to Danny Beasley in May and after placing in his first two starts for his new trainer was able to break through with a neck win.

Serenading and Donegal Bay are the first two foals to race from Rock and Rose and now both are winners!

A winning mare by champion broodmare sire Fastnet Rock from the family of Group I winners Serenade Rose and Trekking, Rock and Rose was bought by Neville Begg Investments for $22,000 at the 2019 Inglis Broodmare Sale.

Interestingly she has a rising two year-old colt by Written By that has been entered for next year’s Golden Slipper and featured in our 2026 Golden Slipper Sale Mail story last week as he was one of the cheapest entries for the world’s richest 2YO race.

He was recorded as a $600 purchase in an Inglis Digital Sale earlier this year, but the nominator for the Golden Slipper is Neville Begg and the colt already has a name… I’m Relevant and a trainer… John Thompson.

Serenading is the ninth 2YO winner this season for Written By and two of them are stakes-winners The Playwright (G3), Bona Sforza and Group I placed Buffalo.

Written By stands at Widden Stud, click for more info and a Hypo mating.

Written By stands at Widden NSW this spring at a fee of $22,000.
