The record price for a yearling by the late champion sire Snitzel stands at $2.8million, but that benchmark looks set to be smashed at Inglis Easter next year.
The next chapter in the extraordinary Winx story will be written at the 2026 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale when her Snitzel colt, her first male offspring, is offered for public auction.
The owners of the colt - Peter & Patty Tighe, Woppitt Bloodstock, Elizabeth Treweeke and Rick Treweeke - have confirmed the colt will be catalogued for the prestigious sale at Riverside Stables in Sydney following the unprecedented success of Winx’s first foal – a Pierro filly – which sold for a record price for a yearling filly of $10m at the 2024 Easter Sale.
Winx is one of the most accomplished racehorses in the history of the thoroughbred – she is the only horse to win four G1 Cox Plates, the record-holder internationally for G1 wins (25) and the only horse on the planet in the past 50 years to have won as many races consecutively (33).
Winx defeated 78 individual G1 winners during her career while her peak Timeform rating of 134 was equal to the likes of Japanese Champion Deep Impact and Champion European Enable and better than Makybe Diva, Sunline, Atlantic Jewel, More Joyous, Japanese Champions Almond Eye and Gentildonna and US Champion Zenyatta.
Snitzel, meanwhile, is a four-time Champion Sire of Australia and four-time Champion Sire of 2YOs; he’s the sire of 12 Champions, 23 G1 winners, 160 Stakes winners, 62 Stakes-winning 2YOs and 17 Stakes-siring sons.
As Coolmore’s Tom Magnier said earlier this year “Snitzel is one of the best stallions Australia has seen this century’’ – his progeny have already won three G1 Golden Slippers, four G1 Guineas, two G1 Golden Roses, two Everests, a G1 Cox Plate, a G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes etc.
The Snitzel colt will be consigned by Coolmore Stud, the farm on which Winx herself – as well as her Pierro filly and Snitzel colt – were raised.
The colt’s part-owner Debbie Kepitis described the Snitzel colt as “a standout’’.
“He’s a very handsome boy. Just wait until you see him, he’s got everything going for him,’’ Kepitis said.
“From the day he was born he’s been a very charismatic horse. He has been bred to win a Cox Plate and anyone who looks at him tells me that he has all the right physical characteristics to be an elite racehorse.’’
Peter Tighe added: “The thrill the sale of the Pierro filly last year gave the ownership group was indescribable, it absolutely blew our minds, the team at Inglis did an incredible job and we think the Snitzel colt will get the attention of investors from right around the world in 2026.
“The journey Winx, and then her Pierro daughter, has taken us on has been incredible and now somebody else gets the rare opportunity to buy a son of arguably the greatest race mare we have ever seen, certainly in our eyes at least.’’
Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch was again humbled by the prospect of offering Winx’s latest foal for sale at Riverside Stables in Sydney next autumn.
“To have the first male offspring of the mighty Winx coming to the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale is an absolute thrill and something we’re hugely grateful to the ownership group for,’’ Hutch said.
“I have been lucky enough to see this colt a number of times through his development. He has always looked like a good horse and I think he is going to present as a very good yearling at the sale.
“First and foremost, the objective of the ownership group has been to try and breed the best racehorse possible out of the mare and I think this colt gives them genuine cause to be very excited. He is a handsome colt with great movement and an unflappable temperament. He’s a special sort of horse.
“His presence at next year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale is going to make for a captivating spectacle.
“The sale typically engages an incredibly broad group of bloodstock investors and enthusiasts from around the world anyway, but having this colt as the focal point of the sale is only going to enhance that further.
“The sale of his sister was compelling viewing and I don’t think anyone is going to want to miss out on seeing this colt go through the ring.
“It’s going to be a particularly enjoyable time in Sydney, with the Easter sale as part of a showcase of Australian racing and breeding along with the Sydney Autumn Carnival and The Championships.’’
