One To Watch – Randwick

Dane Squance - Wednesday June 25

After impressing on debut, the Chris Waller trained 3yo Super Seth filly Frosty Girl (NZ) took on the older mares on the Kensington track, remaining unbeaten with another stylish victory to become Breednet’s One To Watch.

Winning by more than a length and a half when making her debut over 1300m at Warwick Farm in early June, jockey James McDonald continued his association with the Glenn Ritchie owned filly in Wednesday’s Remembering John Ryan Handicap (1300m) for the 3yo and upwards, fillies and mares.

Missing the start, McDonald never panicked and allowed his filly to find her feet, working along the rail to settle with the field in last position.

With the Pakenham-trained I Am Velvet (I Am Immortal) taking up the running for trainer Philip Stokes, jockey Braith Nock controlled the race on the four-time winner.

As I Am Velvet carted the field into the straight, McDonald was still last aboard Frosty Girl and was searching for some clear running.

The Ciaron Maher trained Miss Couver (Vancouver) headed I Am Velvet, but it was clear the race leader still had something to offer as 4yo mare California Sunrise (Pierro) was starting to charge at the leading duo.

Finally finding a gap, Frosty Girl sprinted with gusto, taking the lead at the 50m mark from I Am Velvet who had wrestled the lead back and was starting to look the winner.

Taking her record to two wins from as many starts, Frosty Girl defeated the gutsy I Am Velvet by a half length with a further length and three quarters back to the Peter Snowden trained California Sunrise.

Interestingly, Waller and McDonald will team up with owner Glenn Ritchie this Saturday with 2yo colt Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) who contests the Listed Tattersall’s Stakes (1400m) while Firestorm (NZ) (Satono Aladdin (JPN)) tackles the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).

Trainer Chris Waller was suitably impressed with the victory of the exciting filly.

“He is doing a great job, Super Seth. And, yeah, she's got a bright future and going to fly the flag for him,” enthused Waller.

“We're still learning our way with her, and she's learning her way too. She missed the start and did a few things wrong. The rest of the race was pretty exciting.”

“Ideally, she gets a nice draw, settles fifth or sixth, and she'll win a good race or two.”

Purchased by Chris Waller Racing and Mulcaster Bloodstock for NZ$150,000 as a yearling from the New Zealand Bloodstock Book 1 sale, Frosty Girl was bred by Waikato Stud and Gary Wallace.

Frosty Girl is out of the O’Reilly mare Oh So Chilled, a three-quarter-sister to Listed-winning, Group 1 placed The Big Chill (O’Reilly) and to the dam of the dual Group 2 winner Coldplay (Savabeel) as well as a half-sister to the Listed winner Savacool (Savabeel), who was also trained by Waller.

Oh So Chilled has a yearling, and weanling filly, both by Savabeel, to come and was covered by Savabeel’s Group 1-winning son Noverre last season.

As the sire of four individual Group 1 winners to date, Super Seth will stand for a fee of NZ$75,000 in the spring at Waikato Stud.
