Trained by Patrick and Michelle Payne, Buccleuch was a raging hot favourite for the 1400m maiden coming off a good last start second at Flemington to highly regarded stakes-winning gelding Highvol.

Punters were on the right track as he powered away from older rivals to win by nearly three lengths with Billy Egan in the saddle.

Egan has ridden Buccleuch in all three starts to date and believes he has a bright future and will appreciate more ground.

“He felt good today and has improved with every start,” he said.

“He’s still got a bit to learn, but he’s had good experiences so far and his confidence will grow.”

Retained to race in the Tait family colours, Buccleuch is the second winner from stakes-placed Fastnet Rock import Golden Fastnet (Fr), a half-sister to Group III winner Wind Chimes.

Buccleuch is the second winner for So You Think’s speedy Group II winner Peltzer who stands at Twin Hills this spring at a fee of $11,000.
