Maternity Leave Well and Truly Over for Mahogany Girl

Tara Madgwick - Sunday March 9

An interesting result at Hawkesbury on Saturday was the win of Mahogany Girl in the $150,000 Polytrack Provincial Midway Championship Qualifier (1400m) as while stallions sometimes come back to racing after a stint at stud, mares rarely do it, but she has proved it is not only possible, but profitable!

A six year-old daughter of Medaglia D’Oro stallion Mshawish (USA), who shuttled to Australia for just one season, Mahogany Girl was retained to race by her breeder Scott Robertson and finished third on debut at Wagga on January 6th 2022.

She had been showing good ability in the Peter Morgan stable, but an injury saw her sidelined and the decision was taken to get her in foal to Twin Hills Stud’s young stallion Peltzer.

Mahogany Girl produced a colt on October 6, 2023 and after he was weaned, she was put back in work with Darryl Kell at Hawkesbury and he has transformed her from broodmare into winner!

She won barrier trials last June and August before returning to the races for two placings at Queanbeyan and Goulburn over 1000m before breaking her maiden at Hawkesbury on October 24.

Since then she has kept improving with subsequent wins at Hawkesbury on December and February before her all important half length victory on Saturday that has seen her earn a start in the $1million Provincial Midway Championship Final at Randwick on April 12.

With four wins and four placings from nine starts and $157,900 in prizemoney, Mahogany Girl is the first foal of Casinoholic, a nine time metro winner by Casino Prince from the family of Group I winner Russeting. She too was covered by Peltzer in 2022, so also has a yearling colt by the Group II winning son of So You Think.

Footnote: Mshawish (USA) has had eight winners from 12 starters in Australia with Group III winner Wishlor Lass the best of them and he was last seen standing privately in Qatar.
