Mahogany Girl a Winner and a Mum!

Tara Madgwick - Thursday October 24

It’s not very often that a mare has a foal and comes back to racing and rarer still that she would come back and win, but Mahogany Girl did just that at Hawkesbury on Thursday.

A six year-old daughter of Medaglia D’Oro stallion Mshawish (USA), who shuttled to Australia for just one season, Mahogany Girl was retained to race by her breeder Scott Robertson and finished third on debut at Wagga on January 6th 2022.

She had been showing good ability in the Peter Morgan stable, but an injury saw her sidelined and the decision was taken to get her in foal to Twin Hills Stud’s young stallion Peltzer.

Mahogany Girl produced a colt last spring on October 6 and after he was weaned, she was put back in work with Darryl Kell at Hawkesbury and he has transformed her from broodmare into winner!

She won barrier trials in June and August before returning to the races for two placings at Queanbeyan and Goulburn over 1000m.

Stepped up to 1300m on Thursday with Chad Lever to ride, Mahogany Girl jumped well from an inside gate to lead on the fence and gave a good kick to the line to win by more than a length over a pair of I Am Invincible maidens.

Darryl Kell was thrilled to greet Mahogany Girl as she came back to scale.

“She had an injury early in her career, so they decided to put her in foal to a stallion down there near Wagga in Peltzer,” said Darryl Kell.

“He’s a yearling now and is a beautiful colt. It’s been a long process and it’s thrown us a few curve balls.

“She got the perfect set up today and we thought the 1300m would be ideal. Chad gave her a peach of a ride and it could not have worked out better.”

Mahogany Girl is the first foal of Casinoholic, a nine time metro winner by Casino Prince from the family of Group I winner Russeting. She too was covered by Peltzer in 2022 and also has a yearling colt by the Group II winning son of So You Think.
