Capricornia Yearlings to Bring Buyers to Rockhampton

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday March 21
The 2018 Capricornia Yearling Sale will be held in Rockhampton on the 8th of April this year - This annual sale is now one of only two independent thoroughbred yearling sales held in Australia today and offers a three day carnival of racing and sale related activities on the 6th, 7th and 8th April.

There are 113 lots catalogued with 106 QTIS eligible yearlings, our highest number ever. They represent the best quality yearlings that we have offered in recent years with a good spread of stallions ranging from the tried and true performers to some exciting new season sires.

Underpinning the sale's success is undoubtedly the attraction of the exclusive sale races series with buyers now having three opportunities to race exclusively for decent prizemoney. The 2YO Race carries prizemoney of $100,000 and there is now two 3 and 4YO (combined) Races worth $50,000 each for graduates to compete in.

These races carry QTIS bonuses for eligible horses and as an added incentive this year, offered by Racing Queensland, these bonuses will double for the 2 and 3YO winners of these races. A winning filly could pocket an additional $25,500 bringing the total winner's purse to $89,500, whilst colts will receive a $17,000 bonus, $81,000 in total to the winner.

The chances of winning these races are normally around one in seventy, so whilst the prizemoney isn't as grand as other sale race series, your chances of winning are much better.

If anyone is looking for a QTIS eligible 2YO for next season then they need to seriously consider the 2018 Capricornia Yearling Sale. With 106 QTIS yearlings on offer this year we have our biggest draft to date.

The sale has produced some great horses with River Lad being the most recent successful graduate along with Looks Like The Cat and Cash Dash, both of whom sold to Hong Kong for $500,000 each.

Laurel Glen Equine Centre are great supporters of this sale and their draft can be seen here

First Season Sires Better Than Ready, Hvasstan and Whittington have a good depth of yearlings on offer.

Better Than Ready is represented by seven yearlings in total and Lot 111 is the first foal of the seven times winner Tiger Dimejan by Falvelon , a half-sister to the Stakes winning mare Cape Kidnappers. Both these mares will be fresh in the minds of racegoers and breeders due to their strong racetrack performances at Brisbane Metropolitan level.

Lot 111 - Better Than Ready x Tiger Dimejan

Tale Of The Cat stallion, Whittington, has eight yearlings representing him in this year's sale. Lot 89 is a colt out of the Lion Hunter mare Sahifa who is a half-sister to eight times winner, Double Impact, and a Melbourne Metropolitan winner. Her most recent foal, Love And Rock It by Love Conquers All, has won at Doomben and Sunshine Coast since the catalogue has gone to print making it two wins and two seconds from only five starts.

Lot 89 - Whittington x Sahifa

Lot 3 is a half-brother to a four time winner by prolific sire of winners Rothesay out of Sequalo mare A Sweetee, a three-quarter sister-in-blood to  Group III winner Showbiz Kid, a winner of over $500,000 in prizemoney.

Lot 68 is another by popular first season sire Better Than Ready from an un-raced half-sister to Gr3 winners Just A Dream and Forfar. From the family of Gr3 winner Most Important, winner of over $800,000.
