Rubick's Rubylot Wins HK Classic Cup

Craig Tompson - Sunday March 2

Rubylot gave Rubick his 14th stakes winner and put himself into the Hong Kong Derby picture with a stunning last to first burst to win the Listed Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Rubylot wins the Hong King Classic Cup for Brenton Avdulla and David Hayes

Having won two starts prior, Rubylot then ran strongly from an awkward position in the Hong Kong Classic Mile at his first start beyond 1400m, and had no trouble with the rise to the 1800m in this race, with Brenton Avdullla having him last at the 1200m mark before working forward and bringing him with  a powerful finish out wide.

The David Hayes trained four-year-old beat My Wish (Flying Artie) by ¾ of a length with Johannes Brahms (Siyouni) third.

“Hayesy had the horse spot on,” said Avdulla.

“He had a nice run though. I was confident at the 250m he would get the job done.”

The win takes his record to six wins, three seconds, and five thirds from 18 starts with earnings of $14,546,000.

Rubylot was a $100,000 purchase for Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock from the Woodpark Stud draft at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale.

He is the fourth foal and one of three winners from five to race for Dubawi mare Emirates Comfort (GB), who went to stud being placed and no doubt is offering plenty in the stamina department.

She is a daughter of German bred Royal Highness (Monsun), a multiple Group winner in France and the US, including a win in the Group I Arlington Park Beverley D Stakes and the family is peppered with high class middle distance gallopers in both Europe and the US.

Emirates Comfort has an unraced two-year-old by Aylmerton named Buffo, foaled a colt by All Too Hard last year and was served by Capitalist.

Rubylot is the 14th stakes winner for Swettenham Stud’s Rubick and one of eight winners from 19 runners in Hong Kong.
